Hi all,
As mentioned last week, a Dutchman named Peter van Gelderen has been beavering away in our museum to complete his full size Stirling cockpit mmmm…. something (since the previous posts about replica/reproduction I don’t dare to name it) and it gives a very good view about the size of this aircraft type’s cockpit alone. A true labour of love and the photo’s don’t do the magnificent work any justice, especially when you think that there are almost no drawings to help him. Hope you enjoy the pics.
Cheers

Seriously a minute, are there any intact or partly intact Stirlings known of lying in fresh water, or any possibilities of some?

I have an original lever unit Cees ,if that`s what you`re referring to.We can take measurments from this for new castings as the lever units are the same.It is always nicer to use the original fittings though…if available.

Nice to see that the are still around, I agree that a good drawing would be very benefical to you and the stirling project, has the owner contacted about a good drawing?
Cheers

On the subject of Stirling parts, apparently parts were found recently in the tunnels of the old factory at Shorts Rochester [ which are still there ] but I dont know what parts they were. Probably not airframe as we would have heard.
Graham
The tunnels were behind the Seaplane Works by the river. Mostly air raid shelters, there was also a machine room in the tunnel behind 18 shop.
Most likely to be Sunderland/Sandringham parts if anything was found but Short Brothers did make floats at the airport so maybe parts for the Stirling were made at the Seaplane works or the Strood extension.
However, I’ve spoken to people who have been in the tunnels recently and there is nothing in there now. Which is a shame. I wonder what parts came out.

Pictured here is the Flight Engineers fuel Control wheel and lever unit (sorry bad picture). The fuel control wheel was from a crash near Bournemouth,I have no History on the lever unit.
Snap!
I wouldn’t mind betting the levers were found in the Mag-Elektron yard, as were these.
n.b. the yard was completely cleared out years ago, so don’t go rushing to visit. 🙁

Stirling Parts
Sigh. 🙁
The first dedicated Stirling thread on this forum for ages (ever?) and it ends up like this.
Many congratulations to Peter van Gelderen for his efforts, I would love to see the finished work. The world needs more StirlingStuff.
The great pity is that, face to face, rather than by email, much of what has just gone on would never have been said. Emails are just too open to misinterpretation. I see it all the time at work and it is a great shame that it has to taint this forum, where we are all on the same side after all.
DS.

Just not all in one place, sadly…
If a place could be found for a National Stirling Aircraft Collection and you could have your pick of any location for siting, what would be the most apt location ?
