Bought a wad of old magazines from a charity shop and one said that an 8 foot section of fuselage was recovered in 1988 and moved by Chinook – what happened to it?

Given the article refers to Stirling N6004, and the picture link posted above shows it displayed at Manston pretty safe to say it aint in Holland 🙂

I seem to remember some harpoon wings (or similar) being recovered from a hilltop and then being scrapped?

Sorry, faulty memory (is that both bits or just one?). I’ll have to try to stick to V-bombers.
Sven
The fuselage section at Newark is from a IX(B) Squadron Lancaster W4964 WS-J and was donated to Newark in 1974 and arrived by lorry early one Sunday morning – I helped unload it!!

The scrapyard at Shefford, certainly received unwanted items from RAF Henlow, that was used to store RAF Museum aircraft, pending display. The only aircraft-like bits I saw there were Gipsy Major bits. The scrapyard has since closed and the area built on.

If it’s the bit I’m thinking of, it’s a Lancaster

Early 1970’s the RAFMuseum sent loads of stuff to a Bedfordshire scrapyard (Shefford??) that included a section of Stirling fuselage about that length. Wish I could find the colourslide I took of it.
