Going on a day trip to STN on thursday, any last advise about view spots or anything else (Any info on how i could walk to the view spots from the terminal)

wannabe pilot,
I think that’s the place, it was just outside the end of the terminal nearest the control tower. Not being staff and not having a car, I don’t really know!

Nice pics, did you take that Titan one from near the bridge that goes across the railway to the staff carparks?

I must confess, NCL rules, that I had no idea which airline it was, I just liked the colour scheme! That was the day I spent 6 hours waiting for my flight, and would have really appreciated having the spotting map! It was a scorching day in July last year and I was returning from a month’s aviationfest in the USA.

. . . and the other while waiting to board this aircraft departing to Göteborg Säve, one of the smallest airports in Sweden, I would guess, consisting of a tin shed. There appears to be only one guy to handle the luggage, and he loads the outgoing aircraft before dealing with the incoming luggage, so it’s always a 45 minute wait to get your bags, off a single aircraft movement!

The only decent pix I have obtained at Stansted are these, the first from the control tower end of the passenger terminal . . .

Erm nope it’s still the worst! Security are VERY tight (getting the police on me just for locking my bike up in a wooded area  ). There are no official spotting places, and even the un-official places aren’t too good. The main problem is that the land is quite un-flat, and so trying to take pictures of aircraft on the ground is made nearly impossible unless you want the wheels of engines cut off. The only pics I’ve ever managed to get of planes at STN are of planes on approach, as there are no fences in the way and I don’t need much zoom for my rubbish camera!

Yes if you just want to grab a few reg’s then it is possible from alongside the terminal. However, views are restricted, security are tight and there’s not much to see. Only really useful if you have a short amount of time to kill. Thanks! 😀

last time i was there i managed to get most of the aircraft parked on the piers and the frt apron by walking along the front of the terminal to 2 little areas where there was a low wall and i could just about read off all the movements with my binocs. I’m sure i will certainly use this thread at some point again when i transit STN! Many thanks.

But good news, the planes have been on RWY05 for the past couple of weeks and still are today, so hppefully it’ll remain that way. Then you don’t have the long boring walk to the field! You can just walk down past the control tower etc instead.
That is good news, keep me posted on what runway they are using,
Cheers,

Ok…hmm I should be going to Heathrow on that day by train just to do some spotting, but if that doesn’t go ahead there’s a chance I could meet ya and show you around. Thanks Speedbird12T and BigVince. Speedbird and Concordesst, is there any reason for you coming down to STN? And how long are you gonna be here for?

Thanks Papa Lima and LBARULES, when i get people thanking me it actually makes it feel like it was worth taking all the time it did! And for anyone else planning to visit STN, hope ya take note! It’s perhaps not as easy as many of you may be used to at your ‘local’ airports.

I might never visit STN and have no plans to, but that guide is absolutely superb Wannabe. Well done mate 🙂

Thanks, wannabepilot!
I once spent 6 hours at Stansted waiting for my (Ryanair) flight to Sweden – next time that happens I’ll have my printout of your maps handy and take a stroll!
By: wannabe pilot - 11th April 2004 at 13:34
And finally spot 3. In my opinion the best of the bunch, aslong as they’re on RWY05.
By: wannabe pilot - 11th April 2004 at 13:33
Spot 2 (As I said, nearly impossible for good shots)

And that’s it! Now if this thread ever gets deleted, I’ll cry! Taken me bloody ages! I’ll show a few pics below from the different spots….
