Stopping The Rot 6th October, 2012, Manchester

The bi-annual seminar organised by the British Aviation Preservation Council “Stopping The Rot” is nearly upon us – and YOU can go.

This year it is being held at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on Saturday 6th October there is an excellent programme of speakers. You can attend for the whole day (including lunch) or just the afternoon session (not including lunch) when the presentations relate to A.V.Roe/Avro. MoSI has, of course, an extensive collection of Avro aeroplanes on display.

Featured presentations include:

RAF Heritage Strategy – Wing Commander Erica Ferguson
It has been suggested that the RAF and the MoD have no interest in their heritage. Is this really true? Erica will be explaining the RAF Heritage strategy and its relevance to the ongoing work of the BAPC.

Dornier from the Depths – Ian Thirsk, Director of Collections, RAF Museum.
When Dornier 17 Z-2, serial number 1160, of 7 squadron, 3 Group, third Bomber Wing was shot down on 26 August 1940 over Goodwin Sands, no one expected it to become one of the most significant aeronautical finds of this century when it was found in 2008 When the RAF museum surveyed the wreck, the Dornier was found to be largely intact, the aircraft’s structure having suffered no catastrophic damage during its final landing. Ian will be describing how the Museum’s recovery plans are going.

Accreditation & Training – Why Bother…? – Brian Dixon, BAPC Secretary.
“Registration” was once the buzz word in the museum world but now it is “Accreditation”. Brian will explain why it is so important and why education and training should be a priority, especially when seeking grant-funding.

The John Bagley Memorial Lecture AV Roe : The Early Days – Eric Verdon-Roe
We are very fortunate to have the grandson of Alliot Verdon Roe deliver this year’s John Bagley Memorial Lecture. Eric has a keen interest in Avro’s heritage and has worked tirelessly to promote the pioneering work of his grandfather – including the commissioning of a 1908 Roe Biplane reproduction at Brooklands and a 1909 Roe Triplane replica at MOSI. He will focus on the early years of Alliot’s aeronautical activities.

Preserving Avro Heritage 1: The F and Triplane – Peter Teagle, Roe Heritage Group.
Building a replica is never easy but when there is little information available in company archives it becomes more difficult. However, there were photographs and magazine articles……….. Peter will describe the building of the Avro Type F replica which is progressing towards flight status at its new base at Woodford which was, of course, the former Avro base.

Preserving Avro Heritage 2: Keep them flying: Avro Triplane, 504, Tutor, Anson & Vulcan – Al McDicken
Al McDicken is an ex-Vulcan captain who worked on the Harpoon Nimrod trials and the Vulcan K2 developments. He made the first post restoration flight of Avro 19 ‘KX in 2001. He is one of the pilots for XH558, and regularly flies Shuttleworth Collection aircraft. Al will be sharing some of his amazing experiences while he’s been “keeping them flying”

Preserving Our Past for the Future – Trevor Wright, Chemetall Ltd
Using chemicals during the restoration or preservation of an aircraft or artefact can be difficult. How do you know which to use for best? Trevor will be demonstrating some of Chemetall’s products and showing you how they can make restoration so much easier.

The morning programme starts at 10.00 and the afternoon at 13.30

Prices if you are a member of a BAPC Member group/museum – the whole day is £19 (including lunch) and for the second half £9.50.
Prices if you are not a member of a BAPC Member group/museum – the whole day is £24 (including lunch) and for the second half £9.50.

To apply to attend please contact John King, STR Coordinator on johnking899@btinternet.com

Roger Smith.

It was am excellent day with an audience of about 60 – although disappointing, as Planemike says, that Ian Thirsk couldn’t be there (I wanted to put my Hendon Beacon/SeaLife idea to him :D:D).

Wg Cdr Erica Ferguson, on the other hand, gave a superb presentation about RAF heritage. She demostrates great enthusiasm for the subject and her department (although, I think she said, there are only two of them) seems to be have made great progress in the two years she has been in post.

The programme was a good balance of talks – nicely given a ‘local’ flavour with the three speakers covering A.V.Roe/Avro.

Didn’t meet Planemike but Anon said “hello”.

Congratulations and thanks to John King, Nick Forder and others for bringing it all together. Next one in 2014?

Roger Smith.

Turned out to be a great day with an excellent group fo speakers. Shame that Ian Thirsk of the RAFM was unable to be there.

Many thanks to both of you. I would appear that the BAPC website has an inoperative email address for the secretary.

Hi Roger – we’ve had a couple of emails about tomorrow but unfortunately I’m not able to attend; likewise one of my colleagues is also unable to attend! 🙁

Have a good day!

Also have you seen the tyre / graphite thread about these part? I thought you may be able to offer some input!

As its tomorrow the meeting takes place sadly not enough time to arrange it! Is it possible that anyone going can obtain the email address for the Secretary of the BAPC. I have emailed the contact address from the web site twice with no response.

Anyone else going?

Would be interesting to hear of forum members who are with a BAPC member organisation but hadn’t been informed about the event.

Looks well worth going to if you have an interest in aviation history and restoration.
