Evening all…
Seeing that we have our fair share of Battle of Britain film experts here, whilst watching the Battle of Britain film today, I noticed that in some of the aerial shots, one of the CASA 2.111’s had a strange device fitted underneath the fuselage. I’ve grabbed the following stills from the 2Disc DVD to illustrate:

Does anybody know what this “device” was and why it was retained on this particular aircraft?
Cheers

There are some fantastic images there Roger – here is a link to some very nice Buchon images, especially like the colour two-seater shot on the second page 🙂

There are also a lot of Buchon pics around here, together with other Spanish vintage machines. BW Roger

Cracking pics! I noticed there was a CASA there with FOUR-blade props fitted, too!

🙂 Many thanks for that EHVB… nice to see one of these 2.111’s in its original pre-BoB film finish! In fact, there are a nice selection of Spanish AF 2.111’s photos available from the same website the previous image was taken. For those interested, click here.

Some sort of smoke generator?
Smoke pots were generally fitted to the cowlings on the flying participants in the film. You can probably see them most clearly on the Heinkels in some of the close-ups.

Many thanks for the confirmation Daz… 🙂

Exactly what it is, a fitting for target-towing.
Since the CASA/Heinkels were still in use by the Spanish when the film was being made, the production company could not remove these fittings, so they remained in situ.
There were some bomber aircraft in the film, though, and these can be seen dropping concrete dummy bombs for the bombing sequences.

Many thanks for the replies guys. I seem to remember reading somewhere that some of the Spanish AF CASA 2.111’s were indeed used as target tugs, so perhaps the winch theory is favourite?

Some sort of smoke generator?

I assume it is some sort of auxiliary power device fitted by the Spanish Air Force owing to the presence of a two bladed prop. Or a long shot, a target towing assembly?

Looks like a wind-driven target-tower to me
