Strathallan Aircraft Collection – latter days

I have recently begun the mammoth task of scanning and disposing of physical photographs. Have come across an interesting selection of photos from the post-museum-closure days of Strathallan up here in Scotland. There was a variety of aircraft sitting about both in and outdoors for several years before either being moved on or chopped up. To name a few, Anson, Shackleton, Comet, Lysander, Magister (although i think this is still here since owner Sir William Roberts’ death recently).

Also present on various dates were a selection of non-museum historic aircraft such as Provost T.1 WW453 and Tiger Moth G-ALWS (frame), both of which came over from Perth. Some ex-Russian Yaks arrived early 90’s also, and there were a couple of Fokker bi-plane replicas stored. I have photos of most of these which i will post at some point.

My aim here is to share some of these photos of a period at Strathallan perhaps not so well documented as the days when the museum was actually open. I hope it will stir some memories and also serve as a tribute to all the guys at Strathallan that made so many fantastic things happen over the years – there may be nothing there now but the place has certainly not been forgotten.

I would also be fascinated to hear anyone’s input, stories and see other’s photos of Strathallan planes so feel free to add to this post!

I may well start another Strathallan thread as i have another whole host of photos from the days when the museum was flourishing, and pictures of various aircraft under restoration or in storage – all fascinating too.

Thanks!

This first batch were taken on a misty day in January 1990. Everything was closed up but the Anson, Shack and Comet (WD413, VP293 and XK655 respectively) provided moody subjects looming out of the mist.
I have created a group on Flickr (‘Strathallan Aircraft Collection’ funnily enough!) where i will attempt to bring together as many photos on the subject as possible, so feel free also to add to that if you are on there. These photos also appear on there.

Thanks, Wallace. It had a very tenuous link to the airfield, then!

I asked Jim and this is his reply “…me an Dave Davison (he was Sir Wullie’s last fitter, unfortunately passed away recently). Sold it to Tim Mann after owning for 2 days.”

I most certainly never seen it at Strathallan and as a Strathallan “nutter” had the run of the place.

If I’ve read it correctly the Provost appears to have been based at Strathallan under private ownership for a while rather than being part of the Collection, Wallace. Possibly in the early-90s?

Ah Scone and not Strathallan that makes sense.
So what’s it doing on a Strathallan thread?

Some memories of Strathallen’s final days.
Tigermoth G-ALWS and the Provost WW453 were purchased by Dave Davidson and Jim McTaggart from Scone airfield…..

Mentioned earlier in the thread 🙂

I’m inclined to agree, Wallace. It certainly wasn’t there during the ’70s when the Collection was in its prime. Must’ve been a late addition if at all.

I thought the Strathallan collection only had one Provost and that went to East Fortune. WV493.

I have just taken ownership of WW453 Provost T.1 ,(ex Strathallen Collection) about a month ago, she is 80% complete but in a sorry state . I have removed the panel and I am currently restoring that She is devoid of seats , Engine, Prop , various glass panels, wheels and Sundries, I hope to restore her to static condition over time. and in the colours she first flew in whilst with 2 FTS whilst at RAF Hullavington .
Any help with photo’s, Parts, or if anyone is interested enough to help with the restoration, and it would also be nice to speak to anyone who flew in the old girl , Please get in contact.
I hope you all find this of interest.

When was she painted as I have a postcard of her with RR299 both in camo?

I believe it was done at Leavesden sometime between May and September 1986.

Another air frame languishing in the Weeks collection as ‘being restored to airworthy condition’ I take it? What a waste!

I have pictures of this Mosquito, taken at the Week’s museum, in Florida, in 1986.
It had one engine displayed seperately, and I seem to remember seeing various signatures and messages written on the inside of the bombdoors.
It had by then been painted in camouflage.

Lovely shots.

It has been posted before, but the film is the obvious addition here.

Time to put some life back into this one. Not quite from the end of the museum, more the beginning of the end. December 21 1984 – thirty years ago – that’s quite scary, and the Mosquito departed Strathallan for Booker and eventually on to Kermit Weeks. I recollect that they tried to go on the 20th but she wouldn’t start so we all reconvened the following day to try again. Very cold and with the sun only just clearing the hills a bit of a photographic challenge, especially with Kodachrome 64.

i suppose my interest in the Tiger Moths and things that were around Strathallan in the 60’s is because i gather than some of the airframes (the Tiger Moths and Jackaroo) were very probably cannibalized or used as spares for the flying ‘Tiger’ they had there when the collection came to fruition

Found this in the 1977 edition of Scotland Scanned –

Though not expecting to find much re. the Tiger Moths, a search through the local papers of the 60s turned up this –

I suspect the Tigers referred to there were G-ANOS (airworthy when sold to Canada) and G-ANFV but I may be wrong.

Also a little piece about the early DH60 accident –

That’s the first time I have seen any photographic evidence of the 2 “Fokkers” at Strathallan. They were non flying representations but as far as I can remember built after the demise of the Museum. I visited Strathallan a couple of weeks ago (first time for about 30 years) and the buildings look functional but a bit run down. They were full of agricultural machinery but no sign of anything from the Museum days.

I have a few more shots taken over the years – the Shack and Comet have been done to death by now (if you’ll pardon the pun, not intended) but are still beautiful to look at. The Magister features (is still at Strathallan somewhere gathering dust i believe?), as does an un-ID’d Fokker Dr.1 replica – does anyone have any info on this????

Also around at the time (March 1993) were several Yak imports – will upload photos of these in the coming days as they are certainly interesting. Obviously not ever part of the museum, but was the Fokker replica? There may have been TWO Fokker replicas present, i can’t actually remember, but it rings a bell – only photographed one.
