Strathallan Airshow video

Just found a new, recently-posted video on Youtube of an airshow at Strathallan. Assuming it’s all one show then it’s from 1978 which was when the Casa/Junkers 52/3m was there. A lovely video (unfortunately without sound) which brought back many happy memories –

Yes, it wasn’t yesterday lol 🙂 It was so good to see the Student at Strathallan – I think it was the only jet to take off from there. It gave a really nice display. I admit I am hoping that the Youtube poster might come up with Part 2 soon!

Crikey, when I note how long ago it was that the Miles Student was still flying I start to feel very old!

Hi Colin,

Yes, the first Strathallan display was on 22nd September, 1973. I wasn’t at that one either but, according to the local newspaper report, it featured a Jet Provost pair, Chipmunks, Beaver, Islander as well as the Collection’s Spitfire T.9, Hurricane and Anson (VM360). The Klemm in the video I linked to was present that year too.

Thanks for posting this. I went to the Strathallan air displays in 1974,1976,1977, 1978 ,1982 ,1983, 1984 and 1985. I recall there was no display in 1975 because they were building the big museum hangar. I also remember that at the 1976 display the commentator said their Lancaster would be flying at the following year’s display(!) Didn”t happen! The first Strathallan Display I attended was on 20/07/74 but I notice in Ken Ellis’s book on Lost Aviation Collections he mentions that the first Strathallan Air Display was in 1973. Is that correct?

Colin

Nice to see the countryside I grew up in and around. You won’t find a lineup like that today! If I had a time machine I would probably take the Saturday display over the Sunday display.

Yes it is Duncan Simpson, Hooligan. I’m not sure anyone else ever flew the Hurricane while it was at Strathallan.

Funnily enough, the Junkers wasn’t actually on the Airshow programme. It had been purchased by Dolph Overton and arrived at Strathallan the day before the airshow for some preparatory work prior to its ferry flight to Florida. A very nice surprise addition! The full programme for the weekend was –

That’s Duncan Simpson with the Hurricane I think.
