Stunning fire-fighting Neptune

This incredible picture was taken by Leo Jarzomb of the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper group in 2002. It shows a Neptune, Tanker 16, piloted by Mike Lynn who states –
‘It was a very safe, and a very effective drop. The photo just doesnt give justice to the distance from the edge of the cliff’.

This and many other great photos are at http://WWW.wildlandfires.com including PBY’s, Martin Mars, DC-4, PB4Y’s infact pretty much all USA aerial tankers.
Sorry, don’t know how to post the exact link, but the important bit is wildlandfire.

Hopefully attached is the CAF Minnesota Wing’s PBY flying after the Midland, Texas show back in 2002 which still obviously retains the old fire fighting tanks. Think she may have had a paint job during late 2004 but should be doing the rounds again in 2005.

The Minnesota Wing also has a 2nd PBY, which is being restored to stock military configuration after suffering serious storm damage back in ’98.

Isn’t the Avenger at Duxford a former Canadian Firefighting aircraft? I’m sure I’ve got a photo somewhere of it before restoration in a white and yellow scheme. The Avengers for sale were located in New Brunswick, see the link below:-

Not sure, but www.1000aircraftphotos.com brings up another twin-tail Mars.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/MartinMars.jpg

This is from :http://www.vectorsite.net/avmars.html

The first JRM-1, named the “Hawaii Mars”, was completed in June 1945. The Hawaii Mars had the same wing and float structure as the Old Lady, but was otherwise extensively redesigned. The powerplants were upgraded to 1,790 kW (2,400 HP) Wright R-3350-8 Duplex Cyclone engines; the twin-tail was replaced by a tall single vertical tail; the fuselage was extended by 1.82 meters (6 feet); large cargo doors with electric hoists were installed under the wings with smaller cargo doors placed farther aft; and the internal layout was optimized for cargo and transport operations, with fewer internal bulkheads.

Cheers

Were they in Israel – single engined fire fighters having been phased out in America a while ago.

This picture on this website sows the Martin Mars as having twin tails, any reason for this? An experimental aircraft or different mark?

B17 SHOT

Thanks Chris – they are awesome – very dramatic .I think what comes over in these shots is the fact that it is a very risky flying operation – skill and brvery required in eqaul measures .

I love seeing the 17’s with Civilian Stripes will have to see where this B17 – Tanker 22 is now

and more

The PB4Y Tanker “123” is the one that sadly lost it’s wing and crashed. πŸ™

May the memory of these hard working peoples that have died fighting fires live on ..

WOW!!

Great photos.

Now I REALLY want to see ‘Always’ again. That first shot reminds me of John Goodman copping the load! I wish I could track down that film.
