How would someone describe the particular sound an aero-engine makes? For example, a Merlin- or Griffon-engined Spitfire, Mosquito, Hurricane, Messerschmitt 109?? In particular, how would someone describe these sounds to someone who hasn’t head them??
(This has probably been covered before, but I’m meant to be working just now so can’t go look!! :D)

I thought the JU87 had a merc or BMW engine?
(hence their ability to push to the front and cause mayhem…)

Doh! I was going to tell him Ju87 and watch him try to scale the plans down for VW power!
That’s just plain nasty!

I always rather thoght the Merlin at idle sounded like a VW bug engine….but then I do have a bit of a proclivity for things Pratt and Whitney…

Funny you mention that, Mark. Way back when I was wondering about a VW-powered mini-Spit (pipe down, you lot) I was walking to my work and heard a VW engine from a few yards away – sounded very similar!

Also, do aircraft sound differently taking off from a concrete runway instead of a grass strip?

Growling Rumble
Rumbling Growl
although I love the sound of Merlins and Griffons, as well as Allisons and DB-605’s, IMHO nothing beats a Hispano Suiza HS 51 12Y !
Martin
clicked on the picture link but heard no sound 😀

Just go and visit a bunch of drunken Dutch planespotters during a Starfighter-imitiation howling contest. I’m sure you lot can do the same with piston engines.
I prefer the more rumbling sound of radials, btw.
