Construction of Su-27IB Fighter Bomber with Updated Avionics Begun

Construction of a new, the eighth, Su-27IB fighter-bomber prototype has begun at the Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association (NAPO) with updated avionics, the general director of the enterprise, Aleksandr Bobryshev, reported to Interfax-AVN on Thursday.

“As of today, we have built seven experimental Su-27IB airplanes which are undergoing state joint tests with the participation of air force and Sukhoy OKB airmen. As a result of the first state of tests, we have begun construction of the eighth experimental SU-27IB strike complex with an updated “face,” A. Bobryshev said.

The NAPO general director noted that it is planned to lift this aircraft into the air at the beginning of next year. “The airplane will join the experimental fleet of Su-27IB aircraft which right now are undergoing state tests,” A. Bobryshev said.

According to him, of the seven Su-27IB built earlier, the eighth aircraft will be distinguished chiefly by the aircraft radioelectronic, navigational, communications and sighting equipment.

A. Bobryshev reported that tests of the new Su-27IB strike aerial complex are taking place at the air force’s State Flight Test Center in Akhtubinsk, Astrakhan Oblast’, and the Gromov Flight Research Institute in Zhukovskiy, Moscow Oblast’.

“There are three airplanes at the air force’s GLITs. The remaining aircraft are undergoing tests at the Gromov LII,” A. Bobryshev said.

He noted that every experimental Su-27IB aircraft is a flying laboratory for test “of one or the other aircraft equipment in accordance with a defined program.” This is being done to speed up the whole process of the tests.

In the opinion of experts, the article of preliminary conclusion, which was received for the first stage of tests, allows one to speak already about series production of this aircraft.

In the second stage, new modes of the SU-27IB operation are being perfected which have been prescribed in the program. “Questions of the combat use of the on-board weapons both against ground and airborne, as well as against naval targets are being worked through.

In the Su-27IB arsenal are new types of precision aircraft weapons, which were not on one of the domestic airplanes through today. Nearly 70 percent of the whole amount of work on the Su-27IB tests are tests of new types of armament, the experts note.

Su-24M Tests Underway at GLITs

At the present time, two upgraded Su-24M tactical bomber aircraft are in tests at the State Flight Test Center in the city of Akhtubinsk, and it is planned to complete tests fully of each before the end of this year,

the general director of the Sukhoy Aviation Military Industrial Complex, Mikhail Pogosyan, reported at a ceremony unveiling a memorial to the Su-24M which took place Tuesday on Sukhoy OKB property, Interfax-AVN is sending. According to him, the upgrade and tests are taking place in accordance with an order of the Russian air force, and the upgraded Su-24M will be presented at the forthcoming MAKS-2003 air salon in August, outside Moscow.

The Su-24M is intended for destruction of ground and surface targets in good and poor weather conditions, day and night in the tactical and operational heart of an enemy’s territory. The airplane has a variable geometry wing. The power plant consists of two AL-21F3 engines rated at 11,200 ((kilograms)) thrust each.

The Su-24 has in its arsenal a wide spectrum of missile and bombing weapons, including up to 4 Kh-23, the Kh-28, up to 2 Kh-58, and up to 2 R-60. The composition of the guided missile armament on the upgraded Su-24M has been expanded owing to the use of up to 4 Kh-25L and up to 3 Kh-29L, up to 2 Kh-31P, up to 2 Kh-59 and also KAB-1500L guided aerial bombs.

The Su-24 is built in series at the Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association.

The airplane’s crew is two men. Normal takeoff weight is 35,910 kilograms, and maximum is 39,700 kilograms. Normal combat payload is three tonnes and maximum is eight tonnes. The radius of action is up to 570 kilometers, maximum speed is Mach 1.35 and practical ceiling is 11,000 meters.

New Aircraft Radar Installed on Su-27KUB Fighter

The newest “Zhuk-MSFEh” aircraft radar (BRLS) developed by the Fazotron-NIIR corporation has been installed on the first carrier-based Su-27KUB experimental combat training fighter, the general director and general designer of the Fazotron-NIIR corporation, Anatoliy Kanashchenkov, reported to Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

“The new “Zhuk-MSFEh” BRLS with a phased array has undergone fully a whole complex of laboratory and bench tests and revision. Recently the radar was mounted on the Su-27KUB fighter,” A. Kanashchenkov said.

He noted that the Zhuk-MSFEh” BRLS has passed bench tests, having confirmed all estimated data and characteristics. The software was debugged in the bench tests and climatic tests have been performed, A. Kanashchenkov said.

According to him, the “Zhuk-MSFEh” BRLS, earlier designated as “Sokol,” which has passed the ground tests and is installed on the Su-27KUB, is intended for installation on fighters developed by the Sukhoy OKB, has a phased antenna array and has been developed for export deliveries (MSFEh is Modified, Sukhoy, Phased, Export).

According to A. Kanashchenkov, the Su-27KUB flight test program with the “Zhuk-MSFEh” still is being coordinated.

“Such a situation is governed by reasons of an organizational nature and are not connected with the need for the resolution of any kind of technical questions,” the manager of the Fazotron-NIIR corporation said.

The “Zhuk-MSFEh” radar has a principally new configuration and architecture of building the antenna array. The radar scan angle is plus or minus 70 degrees (the azimuth coverage is 140 degrees), the agency source reported. According to the estimated data, the new BRLS should detect and simultaneously track over 24 airborne targets and shoot simultaneously at up to 8 targets.

More than 25 enterprises are included in the Fazotron-NIIR corporation. Recently, the annual rates of growth of the production volumes and sales at the corporation have been approximately 50 percent. Delivery of export product is today the main source of funds for the corporation’s development.
