Summer flypast over London

Can any of you good folk spill the beans on this? What, when, who, where etc?

All I have heard so far is bar gossip

Well there was no problem when the BBMF performed the Queen Mothers funeral flypast and two spits accompanied the Lanc.

Didn’t all this single engine ban or whatever malarky start after a Spitfire had an engine problem and landed in a park ( Bromley? ) a few years ago?

Apparently, this is what led to the sudden ban by NATS of any ‘non-standard’ flight clearances over Central London by SE aircraft….. 😡

So no banner towing over central London then ‘Ewan’?

Then there was that SEP banner-towing low over central London just a few months ago… apparently approved to do so…

DBW & Mike J,

Swordfish’s in 1995 and the Queen Mum’s funeral bash were some time ago, and I believe that things may have changed since then. Maybe I should have written: “flypasts by single engined piston aircraft (Spitfire, Huirricane etc) are not permitted anymore“. You certainly won’t be seeing any single-engined civilian aircraft doing flypasts over London anymore.

I shall be watching this flypast from a far more exciting vantage point and won’t be able to claim my drink on the day, but you can put my beer ‘in the pipe’ 😀

Still bet you a certain Lancaster is accompanied by two single engined piston fighters!

the only place to see these tri-stars, vc10s, tornados stc etc will be The Mall.

So I’ll be at Duxford then.

OK Ewan, Mike J and DBW, why don’t you have a bet on it?
Meet up in London and if any single piston fighters show up Ewan buys everyone drinks 🙂

There will be single engine types, ie: BBMF (military services) Spitfire(s) and Hurricanes(s). The question really concerns the liklihood of dispensation being granted for civil registered and operated single engine warbirds to join the flypast.

We now have just three Meteor airworthy in UK, the NF14 at Kemble

I think you mean NF11 G-LOSM which is now based at Coventry with the Air Atlantique Classic Flight and as far as I know we have not been approached.

Any Military flypast will be flown to Military rules, and I believe that although RAFAT have and do fly over London, flypasts by single engined piston aircraft (Spitfire, Huirricane etc) are not permitted.

So how do you explain the Lancaster and two Spitfires over the Mall for the Queen Mothers funeral cortege then?

In fact they can with special permission I believe.

Ok, lets try and put this into laymans terms and get away from the rumour and bar talk..

Civilian single-engined aircraft are not ‘banned’ from flying over london, but the requirements for an aircraft to glide clear of a congested area in the event of an engine failure effectively means that they are….unless they are at such a height that will enable them to alight clear. For most single-engined aircraft worth talking about, this will be quite high and unlikely to be approved as it puts them out of sight of spectators, and smack bang in the middle of the airway and controlled airspace structure of the London TMA. Also, any ‘Non-Standard Flight Clearance’ from LATCC will only now be approved for Multi-Engined aircraft in the area between Heathrow and London City Airport

So what this means is that any ‘civilian’ flypast over the vast congested area of London will comprise multi-engined aircraft, and will have to be approved by the CAA…Any Military flypast will be flown to Military rules, and I believe that although RAFAT have and do fly over London, flypasts by single engined piston aircraft (Spitfire, Huirricane etc) are not permitted.

So – OK for BBMF Spitfires and Hurricanes to fly over London (and other military single engine types), but will we see any civilian operated single engine warbirds in this flypast?

I think BBMF Lancaster will have Spitfire and Hurricane with it, isn’t there a Meteor or two about?

We now have just three Meteor airworthy in UK, the NF14 at Kemble and the two Mk.7 1/2s at Charlgrove, although I doubt whether they will participate.
