Why do Northern Europeans leave for vacation during the summer? Summers are absolutely glorious in N Europe and I cant see why anyone would leave at that time of year. In the US most everywhere is hot and humid on the east side, desert hot in the south west which leaves the pacifac nothwest which has gloriously beautiful summers like Europe. So why dont you take you vacations during winter?

Frank,
I do like mountains, but i can also have a lot of fun in flat, boring, grassy lands. As in Russian steppes, not Dutch polders 😉

Hi Geforce , September is still relatively warm up here in Scotland , it’s probably a sensible time to visit as the tourists have mainly gone by then , still pleny to see and do , if you can give me a rough idea of where about in Scotland you intend to visit I will give you a few pointers regarding sightseeing and accommodation , and will find any info you need.

The British Climate is a strange one.. warm-ish summers and often very cold, wet winters.
Regardless of the season though, there’s always rain and it’s always nice to escape the dreadful weather for just a week or two.
However, when it gets hot, it’s nice. I’ve not had a holiday in my own country since 1996, but when the sun shines and their isn’t a cloud in sight, Britain can be wonderful.
At the Farnborough Air Show last year, I remember the sun and blue sky and temperatures nearly reaching 30 degrees (27 or 28).
When you go abroad from the UK, you are almost guaranteed wonderful weather. In this country, you cannot even rely on the likes of Michael Fish to guarantee good weather.
Plus.. our sea is F R E E Z I N G all year round!

15+ degrees at a guess
early eseptember is good but the weather turns by the end of the month – it would be a jumper and trousers affair (so don’t turn up like some aussie tourist)

I already know my country quite well, so i like to travel. I guess it’s not really about how beautiful the place is where you live, but more about what you’re used to. If you live near the Norwegian Fjords, i think you would really be amazed to see Death Valley and vice versa.

Northern Europe has glorious summers ?? Man ! have you ever been to the UK in summer, I can remember snow in June(1976)followed by one of the hottest summers on record, floods, heatwaves, rain for days on end , no year is the same as the last, thats why us Brits main talking point is the weather.
No matter where you are in the world, if the suns shining its always glorious.

Good question.
Here in France , we do have something like 6 weeks of FTO.
However 3 are mandatory between June 1st and September 30th.
But the most important are School vacations , the kids are out of school in July and August.
Some plants are closed in August too , therefore people don’t have any other choice.
