Sunderland airshow. No BBMF?

As the title says.

Anyone know why there is no appearance this year?

It’s the only thing worth going to Sunderland itself for. 😉

(If you ain’t a local, then you wouldn’t understand.)

You know, I was born down south- Surrey, as it happens- and lived in Wales for a long time before moving up here, north of the Tyne, to Newcastle, but I think the anti-mackem comments here are borderline offensive. Take it easy chaps! Plenty of good folk live there too you know.

Ah well you see, your only a long term visitor then.

The Geordie/Mackem trade off has been going since God was a lad, and will continue to do so when/if you return to lager top land. (No offence. :D)

“Jellied eels anyone?” 😉

I was born to insult them, as I’m a Geordie but for my sins live in Yorkshire now.

It wouldn’t be the North East without some Tyneside/Queerside, errr Wearside banter.

I can insult as many mackems as I like… and I fail to see the offensive bit. I live there (although I’m a smoggie!), married one, and one of my kids was born in the city. :p:p:p:p:p

Is it still the largest free airshow in Europe?
Best place to be is the lighthouse at Roker – centre display.
Next best is Whitburn, following that, near the north pier.
Personally, I’ll be at NCL airport looking out of the office window at the arrivals…:D the boy-offspring is obsessed with Miss Demeanor so I have to get him a good view of her!

Sunderland Airshow

Well we don’t normally need an excuse…:p

(and it’s mackems…)

Indeed! The following is from the local paper, the Sunderland Echo…

Police stepping up patrols for Sunderland Airshow

POLICE are stepping up patrols for the Sunderland International Airshow to help stop any turbulence from troublemakers

Hundreds of thousands of people will be landing in the city over the weekend to enjoy the annual event along the seafront and officers are hoping it will be a flyaway success.

But they are urging visitors to be on their best behaviour and to stay safe.

Neighbourhood Inspector Lisa Musgrove, who covers Roker seafront, said: “The airshow is one of the highlights of the year in Sunderland and is a fantastic family day out.

“We know the majority of visitors will not cause us any trouble but those who are intent on causing a nuisance or committing crime are being warned they’re not welcome.

“Extra police officers will be on patrol to reassure people and ensure their safety.

“As with any crowded place, we’d urge people to make sure valuables, like phones and wallets, are kept secure to deter pickpockets.

“Anyone bringing young children is asked to keep a close eye on them, as they can easily get lost in the crowds.

“We’ll be working with other agencies and emergency services to make sure the day is as enjoyable for everyone and action is swiftly taken against those who are spoiling it.”

Visitors are also being sent warnings over water safety.

Over the weekend, 23 RNLI lifeboat volunteers and beach lifeguards will be on duty each day.

An exclusion zone has also been put in place between Roker Lighthouse and Whitburn Steel by Sunderland Port Authority, meaning all boats must stay behind the line of buoys.

Paul Nicholson, Sunderland RNLI senior helmsman, said: “We encourage those attending this fantastic event to follow our advice which will help keep them safe and ensure they have a fantastic enjoyable weekend.

“If anyone needs any further advice during the event, they should contact either an event steward or a member of one of the rescue organisations.”

This weekend is also the mid-season weekend when BBMF does no flying at all, allowing the crews to have some time off and catch up on any rectification on the aircraft.

That said, I’m only going to Sunderland on Sunday for the Vulcan, and as said above, that’ll no doubt be waay out to sea. The rest of the ‘show’ looks extremely thin- good job it’s free!

Its a pay off between cost and available flying hours. Usually they will do fly-by’s and displays like this when there is the opportunity to participate in more shows on the way or on the way back. Thats how we managed to get a pair of Spitfires at Eshott (They were already in Edinburgh).

When the BBMF go to Europe, I think Poland and Czech Republic this year do they charge the participating airshows?

Just seems odd they can get to these events but Sunderland is ‘too far north’

I believe it was also the 7th most bombed town in WW2, had the last recorded outbreak of cholera in Britain and was also home to one of the UK’s most profilic female mass-murderers.

Fascinating facts which don’t seem to feature in the council’s publicity material. Shame.

Well we don’t normally need an excuse…:p

(and it’s mackems…)

regardless of spelling, (Makems/mackems/macams) they’re still useless… I only live here because I have to..

Anyway – Sunderland trivia:

Sunderland is derived from ‘The Sunter-Land’, in other words the land ‘behind’ or ‘away from’ St. Peters Monastery. Sunderland is quite literally, the wasteland….

Joseph Swan, of the Edison and Swan Electric company (the chaps who gave us the light bulb) was born and educated in Sunderland – specifically Hylton Castle…

Nissan wanted to keep the airfield at Usworth, Sunderland Council decreed that they MUST build their factory on the airfield site….

East Fortune and Windermere were last weekend, they have usually all been on the same weekend so have been able to attract the BBMF nd others to do a Loop around the three.

Because there are no other shows which they could do on the same day this far north.

Poor show this year – even Samson Aviation say they only have 18 visiting aircraft booked… and 9 of them will be red hawks…

catalina is already at NCL, Team Viper expected to display, Vulcan expected to fly at the show, but likely to be several miles off the coast as per usual. I live a mile from the front and don’t go… Its just an excuse for the makems to have a heavy drinking session. bad times.:(
