Sunderland Airshow ( Sunday 31st )

Pleasantly surprised by the Sunderland airshow. Much shorter program, with less acts, & thankfully no 15 to 20 minute gaps between displays. With the RAF no longer having enough aeroplanes to fight and display on the airshow circuit, it was great so see the vintage jets flying rather than the modern fuel to noise machines. 8 acts all pre-1960’s, the other 7 more modern.

My zoom lens is a Nikor 70-300mm, but between around 200-300mm zoom, it tends to loose the ability to focus properly, so yesterday I tried to limit my zoom to 200mm. The flight line at Sunderland is quite a long way out which doesn’t help, but despite these limitations, there were a number of photos I was happy with, and took several zoomed out with more land/seascape in the composition. While there was blue sky for much of the day, there was also a low level haze which made good pictures more difficult resulting in a large number of ‘washed out’ pictures where the aircraft was further away.

In no particular order.

I rather like the picture of the Cat coming in above the greenary. Very evocative.

Really enjoyed the Hunters and Vampire. Just need a nice Meteor to join them!

At one point the cliff looked like D-day with the smokescreen over it!

Yes, there were quite a few times the aircraft were hidden as it just hung there.

Looks like you had the same problems as I did on Saturday! Nice work though 🙂
Did you struggle with the smoke from the aero teams not dispersing too?

Sunderland Airshow

For more pictures, you maight like to check out the report that the Daily Mail ran on the story at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2021119/Daredevil-pilots-light-night-sky-Europes-largest-free-air-show.html

The local paper, The Sunderland Echo also carries a report at http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/local/sunderland_international_airshow_takes_flight_1_3634121 – but the pictures are not great (just one shot of XH558). Maybe you should offer them the use of your pictures (for a suitable fee, of course!)

The BBC’s Look North (BBC North East and Cumbria) covered the air show – although, due to a one day strike called by the NUJ, there’s no edition of Look North today (Monday 1st August). Meanwhile, there’s a slide show at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-14353704

But ITV Tyne Tees are not on strike, and they ran a report: video at http://www.itv.com/tynetees/sunderland-air-show69321/
