The photo was given to me by T. Dempster-Jones. He was a photographer on 201 Sqdn at Pembroke Dock and took the photo during October 1944. He waited for a rainy night in order to get the forground detail.

I’d certainly like to see that, BB. Of course those mirrored viewfinders make action shots a no-no! The Girlfriend(!) is badgering me to go to Old Warden as well so if we do….

Sunderland photo
Adrian – Its a long tome since I used a Brownie box camera. My first efforts
using one were at the 1960 Battle of Britain display at Valley – no ropes or barriers –
a Valiant, Anson, Navy Syraider, Seahawks etc. I’ put up a Spitfire photo next week, taken with the camera.
Get in touch when you next go to Old Warden

Chances are it was machine printed – the machines are rarely calibrated to give a good black-white range, more towards just shades of grey – Nermal

Robbo,
Unless you managed to heavily underexpose your negatives, that sounds like their developer solution was getting old.
You could try Efke film – it is a 1950’s style single emulsion apprently but to my inexpert eye does give very good tonal values – certainly on the 25 and 50 speed, I tend to use Ilford for 100 as it’s easy to find (at the mo…)
Now where were we before I derailed the thread?

Wow, wonderful! Now THERE was a man with a feel for an image! Thank you very much for posting it, BB.
Just out of nosiness, are you a Box Brownie user? It’d be nice to think I’m not the only one… One day I’ll get one to Old Warden – now that would be silly fun!

And for those of us in faraway places, where is Pembroke Dock?
It’s in Wales. Actually, right on the edge of Wales, as you might expect.
The comment about waiting for a ‘rainy’ night amused me. They don’t have any other sort in that benighted country.

Great photo – and that’s no small facility – I note a second Sunderland behind the first.
And a 3rd ! so its even bigger than you thought !

Sunderland photo
Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately it’s the only photo I have from This source. Dempster Jone died back in the eighties – a super chap , brilliant artist as well. Pembroke Dock is in South Wales and opened in 1930.The base closed when Sunderlands were withdrawn from service in 1957. I recall my father talking about a flight from there during the war – he sat in the front turret!

Obviously they weren’t so worried about being spotted by the bad guys in October 1944!
