Sunny day on (and off) Long Island

I’ve long been a Lancaster enthusiast. The first warbird I have any specific recollection of seeing was PA474 in 1988, and I’ve been very lucky to see the inside and outside of several Lancs on my travels.

Now I’m in the US, I didn’t expect to see many Lancasters around, but fortunately CWH have answered and FM213 has been to both my local airshow at Reading, and this weekend was at Republic Airport on Long Island. I managed to arrange to go for a ride – here are the pics!

The bridge in the last shot is the Verrazano Narrows bridge at the entrance to the New York bay. I believe the ship just being hidden by the bridge is the Queen Mary 2.

Flying up and down Long Island’s coast in a Lancaster at about 450 feet at around 190mph is great fun! Yes, I am a lucky b@stard!

I was saying exactly the same thing yesterday – it’s the kind of money that yes, it might sting in the wallet for a while, but the memories of that flight will last a LOT longer!

Anyone who forks over the dough and turns up at the museum in Canada on the anointed day will get a flight. I would HIGHLY recommend it. An absolutely incredible experience. The BBMF will never do tourist flights, and as the only other Lanc is in Canada, that’s your option!

Great advice. If you’re a Bomber Command scholar, it seems you’d have to do it…and I’d recommend any 8th AF fans to get a ride on a B-17.
A couple hundred quid plus air fare to North America.
It’s only money, and you only live once.

On your death bed, you’ll have something more to remember than just another holiday in Spain or Orlando.🙂
