Super Constellation

Knowing that there are more than a few Forum members with a penchant for the Connie, here’s a photo of F-BGNJ taken at Nantes this afternoon. Apologies for the “wheels up” appearance – the main runway at Nantes is on higher ground than the terminal area and the apron on the opposite side. I can’t explain the rather lopsided appearance of the tail assembly – maybe it’s down to the missing rudders or the lie of the ground in front of the old hangars.

I make many visits to Nantes and I’ve only ever seen F-BGNJ outside – although having looked at the Aeroscope website, it’s evident that, at some time, she’s been inside for a paint job.

I’m surpised at the suggestion that, during 2007, F-BGNJ was “impounded” by the French military. I’ve never seen any sign of military presence at Nantes – either on the present terminal side or the old hangar side. I wonder if any French forum member can shed any more light on this?

Additional information for F-BRAD/F-BGNJ is that she emerged from the paint shop on 16th April 2007 and then was sort of ‘impounded’ by orders of the military presence on the airport who are in control of the area where the Connie was. This effectively denied the volunteer work force the opportunity to continue their restoration work.

Maybe when your photo was taken, A.A., she had been released from her detention?

i would say that she’s either got a flat tyre or a collapsed main oleo? her wings give an impression that shes down on her starboard side. what is she doing just sat outside?

She’s been outside for as long as I can remember. She used to be parked by the GA area at Nantes, so you saw her on the approach road from the périphérique. A few years ago she was towed to the apron in front of the old hangars, on the opposite side of the main runway to the terminal area, so you can’t miss her (plus the Nord Noratlas and the AN-2) if you are flying into or out of Nantes. If you want to know more about her and the collection of other vintage aeroplanes and gliders that live at Nantes, take a look at www.aeroscope.org.
