The Seafire XV and the Seafire XVII also had the same wing folding arrangement as produced for the Seafire III, so trip down to the FAA Museum would certainly be worth it.

The Seafire III is Type 358 and drawings related to the wings will be in the 35808 series (08 indicating wings). Copies of a wide range of drawings (some 700+) are available from the Department of Research and Information Services (DoRIS) at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

To give you a ‘starter’ suggest obtaining copies of 35808 Sht 91 (GA Folding Wing – Starboard) (Museum reference number MAC3834) and 35808 Sht 92 (GA Folding Wing – Port) (MAC3596).

For reference, the Seafire 1B is series 340, IIC – 357 & 375

Hope this helps.

RAF Hendon archive has nearly 700 drawings in the Type 358 08 series (Seafire f.III wing) so I guess they will have what you need

Yes, and Seafire has oil cooler one side and radiator the other, as per Mk V.

I stand corrected seafire mkIII has a Merlin 55 or 55m, it was the later ejectors that confused me!

Hi Bruce well a mk9 spitfire is a mk5 with a two stage supercharger and a four bladed prop, which is pretty much what the mk3 seafire is isnt it? Or did they have the short engine with a four bladed prop? Either way it is pretty close to both with the exception of the wings.
Firebex, I don’t have drawings but I do have the aircraft production articles if you would like me to scan them?
best wishes Pat

Seafire III is roughly equivalent to Mk V Spitfire. There is no approximate equivalent to a Mk IX.

Is this one?
Sadly it was not treated when dragged up in a net in the Forth in the 1970’s and was eventually scrapped. Wish I had known at the time.

yes of course i am sorry I should have been more specific I am looking for drawings of the wings on the early seafires with folding wings mk3 etc.As the wings are obviously a lot different to the standard Spitfire wing arrangement as they fold outboard of the undercarriage and retain the radiator/oil cooler assemblies on the fixed portion/centre section created to enable the wings to fold and the aircraft to still be moved around on its undercarriage. Also any associated photographs would be helpfull as drawings can be very 2 dimensional but photographs can really help to make sense of things sometimes.

I’m not a seafiire expert but I thought the mkiii was the first to be fitted with folding wings. The seafire III roughly equates to a spitfire mix so if by early you mean mki or mkii I don’t belive there was a wing mod.
