Superstitions?

Following on from the row 13 thread last week, Does anybody have any superstions or rituals they must always do when travelling by air?

I always touch both sides of the door entrance of the aircraft when boarding, silly but it’s something i’ve always done since i was a kid.

I must get a window seat! 😉

I also like boarding as soon as possible, I don’t like being last on the aircraft!

Flight deck visit too. 😉

As I understood it the safest place to be on an aircraft in an accident is in the centre over the wings, as the fuselage is strenghtened here to support the wings.

Well the main spar is definately a very strong part of an airframe. Though some consideration must go to the fact that it also transfers loads around and about so that there isn’t too great an amount of bending on the wings

I don’t like being rushed, I’d rather get there early and sit around for a while and gather my thoughts than be running from check-in to boarding, no idea why 😀

I would of said that nowhere is a safer place to sit on an aircraft. If you sit at the front or back you have a danager of the fuselage coming apart, and if you are sat in the middle you are probably likely to be burnt to death from the ensuing fire from the fuel still in the wings!

I don’t have a superstition really, but I always have a slight fear of the cabin suffering a depressurisation, then the oxygen masks fall out and I can’t get mine on properly…thankfully it has not happend so far.

Has anyone be involved in such an incident?

What?!? You are joking, right? Do you really believe its safer at the back?

Surely the safest place to sit during an air crash is at home watching the horrific news on TV?

relatively speaking perhaps.

But if your plane crashes, 9 times out of 10 it doesn’t matter where you sit, you’ll make the same mess as the rest of the passengers as your plane desintergrates.

I have always had a ritual of insisting on sitting at the back of the plane, as its safer there.

I think mr sadist deano will have something to say about that. You wont be safer if the wings fall off, it’ll generally be a dead cert.. 😉

I don’t get on any aeroplane until I’ve checked it has 2 wings and at least 1 working engine :D.

If I’m the one doing the flying, I pray on the behalf of whatever helpless idiot has decided to get in the a/c with me.

Do they still allow flight deck visits after 9/11?

Whilst on the ground, a lot of carriers still do. I think a lot of it is down to the Captain’s discretion too. I usually ask on the way out of the aircraft to one of the flight attendants ‘Do you think there’s any chance I could have a quick look in the cockpit?’. A lot will come back and say yes. Reasons for not being allowed are usually ‘the pilots have already left’ or more commonly on lo-co flights ‘the pilots are already preparing for the next flight’.

Let’s ask the flight crew on these forums….what would you say if someone was asking for a look in the cokcpit after the flight?

Next you’ll be telling me you always place your tickets into your passport, on the photo page.

Hmm, does meticulously checking your boarding card and passport are still in your bag/pocket every 5 minutes count?

Come to think of that, I do that too!
