Surviving ADC Cirrus Engines in the UK

I had previously described the static display engine as:

– c/n 892 – missing name plate (fitted with ADC Cirrus III Heads  is this a Cirrus II “mod 3?”- or is it a Cirrus III?) – The Aeroplane Collection – Hooton Park
(It is recorded apparently as a Cirrus 2, C/N 892, donated via the Shuttleworth Collection in April 1965)

Based in the 3158 stamped on the engine mount moulding on the crankcase, I think its clearly not c/n “892”.

I can still not resolve if its a Cirrus II with Cirrus III Heads, or simply a Cirrus III?, but if its serial is 3158 (rather than 315 with a spurrolous 8 near by), then I think it would need to be a Cirrus III for the c/n number to be up at that quantity?

I therefore propose to revise my record as:

“Previously recorded as Cirrus mk II c/n 892 but missing its name plate, it is fitted with ADC Cirrus III Heads (Is this a Cirrus II “mod 3?”- or is it a Cirrus III?) and has the number 3158 stamped on the front port engine mount moulding of the crankcase. As that is the typical location of the engine construction number on other examples, then at this stage it would seem this is c/n 3158 not c/n 892.
(The high c/n number may support the proposition that it is a Cirrus III not a Cirrus II?)”

Blackburn Cirrus Major – Midland Air Museum – a photo on Flickriver

If so its a later “inverted” Blackburn Cirrus Major that has been “inverted – upright” ie upside down

I was at the Midland Air Museum yesterday and a Cirrus was on display in the Frank Whittle Heritage section, I must admit I forgot to take a photo!

Thanks Mothminor,  the engine in your photo at Midland Air Museum in 2022 looks a lot like a normally inverted Blackburn Cirrus Major that has been mounted as if its an earlier Upright ADC Cirrus, but the fact that the Crankcase “Cirrus” embossed brand is upside down is a strong clue to its true identity. – I will of course still add it to the list.

Apologies for this late one. I was looking to see if I had photographed a Gipsy engine at Midland Air Museum, Coventry in 2022 but it turns out it was a Cirrus instead!

Thanks Mark. I kept my posts vague as I had a feeling you would be correcting at least one of them! Frustratingly I also caught the Old Rhinebeck Cirrus in a photo too but, being tucked in a far corner of a hangar behind other engines, very little of it is visible. I’ve added the pic below although I doubt it’s of any help to you!

Although its signage describes it as a Cirrus I, this is not an ADC Cirrus engine but seemingly either a late model Cirrus Hermes (inverted engine) or even a Blackburn Cirrus Major/Minor (inverted engine).

Yes thats certainly an ADC Cirrus engine of some sort

I am not sure its a Cirrus Hermes as the sump is a symmetrical V shape, consistent with the original ADC Cirrus I, II and III, where as the Hermes has a more rectangular sump?

The Heads are difficult to see even when the image is zoomed in, but to my eye they seem to be Cirrrus III heads, so again either a late Cirrus II with Cirrus III heads, or a Cirrus III?

The Old Rhineback Museum in New York lists a 1925 / 90HP “Cirrus Minor” on its engine display page on its website.

It seems to have ADC style “CIRRUS” embossing on the Crankcase
(but not clear enough in the image to read and confirm that)
It seems to have Cirrus III style heads
Hence I suspect its an ADC built Cirrus III engine and have listed it at such but the c/n is unknown and the data plate identity yet to be confirmed?
