Surviving British WWII aircraft.

I’m wanting to know how many surviving WWII British aircraft there are.

Aircraft types that I would especially like to hear about are Beaufighter, Hamilcar, Horsa, Beaufort, Lysander. You know, anything other than a spit or Hurricane.

All the stuff I’m looking for will be going on a website I’ll be putting up this summer (Its nearly completed). I was/still am looking for all surviving WWII aircraft (static, flying, whatever).

Ah yes, but what do you class as ‘surviving’? Complete intact original airframes? Complete intact replicas / reproductions? Complete dismantled original airframes / replicas / reproductions? Incomplete dismantled airframes? Substantial sections preserved in museums? Substantial sections still up in moutains? Wrecks lying underwater? Even (whispering this one) just dataplates…?

Good luck with the project, but I think you might need to have a think about what you’re defining as a ‘survivor’. 😉

Yeah, I should have mentioned I was looking for OBSCURE types–you know, those not normally brought up in normal conversation. It was very late at night for me, so I wasn’t thinking too clearly. Tried the registry, found it was not as complete and did not have any combat gliders. Also, Scott told me he would not be putting the Beaufighter/Beaufort lists out till after he finishes the T-6 registry (I assume that its gonna be a long time). All the stuff I’m looking for will be going on a website I’ll be putting up this summer (Its nearly completed). I was/still am looking for all surviving WWII aircraft (static, flying, whatever).

Hi Scarecrow,

Welcome to the forum.

That’s a huge question. Many of the main types are listed here: http://www.warbirdregistry.org/ and the more obscure ones have been covered in the forum; suggest you do a search, say, for ‘Horsa’.

Ask a more specific question, and see what comes up.

I’m working on a book on Lysanders at the moment myself; there’s the Shuttleworth Collection’s machine airworthy, and there’s about four potential fliers globally (USA, Canada, and the continent) and a round couple of dozen on display. Many of these are Canadian built, rather than Westland examples.

Cheers!

Are we talking FLYING British aircraft or just aircraft in general? Pretty large order either way, even minus Spits and Hurricanes….LOTS of ’em out there..
