surviving lancasters

I’ve just been looking at a web site with some info on the surviving lancs & was wondering if anyone knew the whereabouts of KB941? the last recorded info was that it was purchased by Charles Church Ltd in 1990…..

From what I was told by the family KB941 was scrapped  when the family moved and they took KB994 fuselage to their new home where it sat until it was rescued by a group at Edmonton for restoration until it was bought by charles church

Thanks very much for the replies , so basically KB941 was scrapped except for the wing center /  fuselage section which came to the Uk along with the remains of KB994 what a shame , it so nearly survived !

The dispersal and relocating of the various  Lancaster components is pretty hard to follow , but this website gives about the best summary I know of, though it may be a bit out of date in some details now.

The Cockpit of KB941 seemingly got scrapped in Canada along with most of the rest of it?

Its wing centre-section was acquired by Charles Church to help restore KB976 after it suffered a hangar collapse and is now in Kermit Weeks posession.

Or are you referring to the Cockpit of KB994 that was also acquired by Charles Church from Canada about the same time and for the same purpose?

This one is when it was outside

Thanks Robert,

Any idea what year that was, I’m guessing that it may have been fairly soon after it was flown over fron Canada as it would appear that restoration had not started at this point.

Also, what happened to the AEW Avenger – that is also in the pic – following the auction, and why would it appear to have its prop wrapped ?? I seem to remember it’s engine was inhibited and that it was never a runner during it’s time there so….why ??

I know that KB976 was pretty much intact while at Strathallan, and indeed had engine runs there, but obviously it was sectioned for transport to it’s new home.

Does anyone have any pictures of the strip-down and subsequent transportation that they can post ??

Not really in the same league but don’t forget in the Lancaster Corner at Newark Air Museum is the small fuselage section from the 9 Squadron Mk.1 Lancaster W4964 WS-J, which completed 106 bombing missions.

If I remember there was a chunk of the middle section as Doncaster Aeroventure a couple of years back. Along with some photo’s of the complete airframe when the hanger roof collapsed on it. Not sure if it’s still there though.

So am I right in thinking that the centre section of KB941 has now winged its way to Aussie?

Yes Peter, as stated above in my earlier post, this item is now located at Moorabbin, with the Lincoln RF342, it is the same item we exchanged some PM’s about last year.

Blasphemy, there is no such thing as a covered waggon on a Lancaster
The Halifax has one though:dev2:
Why was the pigeon lake lancaster fuselage reduced to spares?

The loss of Charles Church was so very sad. I was unfortunate enough to see the Spitfire flying over Yately just before it crashed, having been at the Dunsfold BAe show, where the aircfraft had been displayed.

I often wonder just how many aircraft we would have flying in the UK today, that are now not, had Charles still been alive today. The Lancaster is one that is obvious, and his Hurricane (G-ORGI??) is another.

Charles Church Lanc

Slightly off topic but…

In the late ’80’s, while work was underway on his Lanc, CC paid a visit to the 8 Sqn Griffon engine bay at Lossie. Having tried to get the four Merlins ‘fettled’ elsewhere, an approach was made to the Shack engine bay. A deal was done (all above board, I must add) with an agreed amount paid to the Station Commanders fund for work done. The engines were in fantastic condition internally. Part of the work done was to ‘convert’ the engines to run on detergent oil (OMD 250 aka Aeroshell W100) as opposed to straight mineral oil (OM 270 aka Aeroshell S100) . If memory serves me correctly, the engines were Packard Merlin 224’s, but I am not certain.

During this work, a chap, who was the Sargeant in the Griffon engine bay at the time, agreed to leave the RAF and work for CC. Unfortunately, following the hangar roof accident, and the loss of CC, the job disappeared.

Funny old game, aviation.

Isn’t this the one that the roof collapsed on?
