Suspected Spitfire Crash 6/9/44 -Italy – parts found investigation team needs help

Hello folks – further to the Beaufighter story posted earlier – I have been in contact with the chaps responsible for the dig- they have pretty much sussed the Beau but need help identiying a suspected Spit crash on the

South of Piacenza on Sept 6, 1944, the pilot, by repute, survived.

Can anyone help Agostino Alberti ID these pieces or has anyone any likely airframes….?

Try Beaufighter. First picture appears to be top cowl to rear of engine, 2nd is panel in front of cockpit.

To me it doesn’t say SS it says 1944, just an odd way of writing 4.

I would concur with the ‘not Spitfire’ opinion.

The large panel in the last photo, though, does seem to show the remnants of an upper-wing RAF roundel. Just a question of which type!

I dont think it is Spitfire, certainly I have never seen anything like the first picture attached to one.

PS look like engine cowlings to me – appear to be Dzus fasteners in first pic?
