Question for you lost regarding yesterday’s show. Did the SVAS have a stall? I was ready to fork out a joining fee, but was unsure where to go to. Perhaps a greater presence would be beneficial?
Frankie at Wellesbourne will have me garters now for not trying harder 😮

Naahhhhh , thats not a real Fergy , thats a Perkins hacked up job . You wanna get some real TED 20 -TVO jobs , warm up on petrol then switch over to used chip shop frying oil , white spirit , kerosene , diesel , paraffin – any other vaguely flammable liquid . Just don’t forget to change the oil , plugs and points every 30 years or so . KVD101 and KSM815 haven’t misbehaved in the last couple of decades or so – not bad considering KVD was born in 1950 and KSM was born in 1951 and are still the only tractors we use . 😀
Somebody want to start a tractor – sorry – vintage aircraft tug thread ??

BlueRobin, surely in your search for “deals” and “benefits” you’re overlooking the real “deal” in all of this, which is that in joining you’re contributing funds to the charity body that supports a unique collection of wonderful airworthy aeroplanes.
Some members feel that in addition to this monetary contribution they’d like to help to do some of the many jobs that go towards maintaining and improving the Collection and providing enjoyment for large numbers of visitors and airshow attendees. For some with engineering skills this may involve working on the planes themselves. For others it might involve maintaining the airfield and hangars or cleaning the ‘planes.
It’s all worthwhile and satisfying work, and you get out what you put in through friendships, the opportunity to study the ‘planes, the many veterans and craftsmen that you meet whilst you work and through the knowledge that you’re helping in some small way to ensure that the Collection continues to provide a source of education, a living memorial for those who flew, built and maintained these machines and a source of pleasure for generations to come.

Strange.
I went to the Shuttleworth website: www.shuttleworth.org
I took the link to ‘Shuttleworth collection’ and thus found the SVAS page: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/svas1/index.html
It lays out the membership charges, what the members do, and achieve, how many there are and basically all the above.
On another click I could download the PDF joining form.
This did not seem hard, and rather renders some of the ‘Puzzled of Buttonland’ questions superfluous. Should our index fingers be cripled and unable to navigate to the above link, here is the membership costs:
Senior: £22.00
Annual Overseas: £27.00
Life: £450.00
Life (over 60): £250.00
Junior under 16: £7.50
Annual overseas: £12.50
But first it states the point of the SVAS:
The Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society is a charity with over 2.700 members whose aim is to support The Shuttleworth Collection. SVAS support includes.
Purchase of aircraft, vehicles and spares. Maintenance of hangars and aerodrome.
Aircraft movements on flying days
Tableaux building and re-enactment
The SVAS raises and donates to The Collection around £65.000 a year which has enabled the acquisition of the Lysander, Chipmunk, Provost, Bucker Jungmann and Prentice and the annual purchase of all aircraft spares.
Perhaps it could outline the benefits of joining to the joinee. Should I feel that is required, I could follow the nice request on the page: “If anyone has any comments on our web site would they please let us know at the address below.” And my final but of hand holding is to provide that address: “Contact details: SVAS. PO Box 42. Old Warden Aerodrome. Biggleswade. Beds SG18 9UZ Answerphone 01767 627398 E-Mail: svas@oldwarden.fsnet.co.uk”
I believe that many of the collection’s recent acquisitions such as the Lysander, Provost and Jungmann have been funded entirely by SVAS, as have the annual spares purchases for the operational aircraft.QUOTE]
You are quite correct Mike, the SVAS did indeed purchase the Lysander, Provost, Jungmann and the Chipmunk for the Collection and also pay for spares.

If you look on the SVAS web site Wednesday evening (17th) the benifits will be on the home page, hope this answers your question

Will bear it in mind Damien thanks

Now this all assumes the SVAS want extra members and the Collection doesn’t mind…
It would be interesting, as Moggy previously mentioned, to do a costing on those remote card terminals you see in restaurants. How much would the bank charge? Would it be cheaper to say have some laptops running the internet over GPRS and have the fees paid that way? Active recruitment works well. You only need to look at how Red Bull is marketed by those girls in those cars.
More low-tech cheaper methods relying on passing trade have been discussed.
Now ‘ere ‘ere, the SVAS page has changed since I started this thread. There’s still a problem in that it doesn’t fully highlight what benefits a member can get (inc those for pilots!). Perhaps they can be posted here and the site remedied?
I have to confess that I thought the membership fee was £40, which would mean I’d have to visit 3 shows to be quids in. What do you mean you can smell shellfish? :p Has the fee come down of late?
Good this is getting fed back guys. Keep up the good work and you never know, you may have a willing volunteer in me yet.

As a stuffer of the propswing into envelopes, it would be rather difficult for us to select the odd address out of 2800, Im sure you’ll agree, but feel free to give the spare copy to your friends and hope they will join.
By: Ant.H - 9th August 2005 at 00:44
I seem to be in a minority here, but I have to say I found the SVAS tent by the control tower on Sunday with no problems, parted with my very reasonable £14.50 sign-up fee and voila!,one membership and the latest copy of propswing. Having thought it would be the twenty-something-quid fee,I decided to plough the ‘spare’ £7 quid into guess the height.
By: Moggy C - 8th August 2005 at 21:49
There is a large sign on the drive in the display (straight in front of you as you turn sharply to the left) which advertises the SVAS and where to purchase membership but perhaps additional large ‘Join Here’ signs would be useful?
Not ‘Join Here’
‘Get your entrance fee refunded here’ would work far better

I do wish they’d stop sending the Moggy household two copies of Propswing.
Mrs Moggy would be quite happy to read my copy and thus save a quid or so for the collection.

It’s not too difficult to find the form, fill it out and send in the cheque. 3 shows a year and you’ve recovered the sub! And you get the bonus of 3 copies of Prop-Swing which is informative and well produced. Just do it! You know it makes sense.
