I don’t know about 6m of water, but 6ft certainly. The interior photo’s taken at the time of recovery show, by virtue of corrosion and deposits etc, just how deeply “Swamp Ghost” has been submerged in the past. It appears that she would have been flooded up to the top of the waist gun windows during the wettest periods.

Bad translation perhaps? 6 inches of water perhaps? A remote site yes, and thus hard to get equipment or tourists to!

She was not under 6m of water.
Swamp ghost is clearly visable on Google Earth (at the swamp loaction). Had she been under water, she would not have been found.

According to that linked article, Swamp Ghost was recovered from under 6m of water…I don’t think that sounds right. Pictures of her showed her at least mostly above water???!!! Guess I am just confused!
I would think it better to halt the corrosion and display her as a monument…indoors somewhere. We have quite a few flyers…this one actually has some history. 😮

Wow finally all politiking aside the B-17 will return to the States, I have been loosely following that story for 30 years since I first read about it, they made some good points about tourism, obviously since remote location no good for tourists, its a point I have been stating for years about aircraft underwater, bring em all up so we(enthusiasts) and the public can see them whatever condition they are in, of course money can fix/rebuild anything if you want to make them fly, did anybody see where the location in the US will be?

Thank goodness common sense finally prevailed!
Now….what about “Sand Ghost”?

Im pretty sure the idea is to restore it. I can’t see them spending all that money, just to get a display aircraft.
Besides, a preservation job would also remove most original paint and markings, in order to treat the skin.

Lets hope it gets preserved and NOT restored
like all original paint and markings being removed etc!!
