Swiss airline in spat with BA

Thursday, May 27, 2004 Posted: 1210 GMT (2010 HKT)

ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) — British Airways is leaving it to Swiss to end a spat over the Swiss airline’s frequent-flyer reward scheme, “Travel Inside” magazine reported, quoting a BA official.

Swiss International Air Lines was due to join the strategic oneworld alliance at the end of March, a move seen by many as key to its fight for survival.

But the flag carrier first needed to reach an agreement with oneworld founding member BA to join its frequent flyer programme, and that has been stalled because Swiss does not want to hand over guarded client data.

“It is now up to Swiss to approach us and to let us know how they want to proceed,” Paolo De Renzis, the British Airways country manager for Switzerland, told the Swiss magazine.

He said talks between the two airlines continued despite the spat.

“We can take the next step only once this point is sorted,” De Renzis said. “We have agreed to this integration in principle, but we did not expect such technical and logistic difficulties, which will also cause costs for us.”

He declined to comment on talk that Swiss might join Lufthansa’s Star Alliance instead.

Swiss has named former Lufthansa manager Christoph Franz as its new chief executive, which together with the hold-up with BA, have sparked talk that the cash-strapped carrier, formed from the remains of grounded national airline Swissair, may turn to Lufthansa after all.

The German carrier has hinted it would restart negotiations with Swiss if it were approached, but Swiss has said its strategic goal remains to join oneworld.

Nobody at Swiss was immediately available for comment.

Its highly illiquid shares were unchanged at 12.05 francs by 1150 GMT, while British Airways stock traded 1.5 percent higher at 253.15 pence. Lufthansa shares were 1.3 percent higher at 11.58 euros.

I really don’t see how Swiss would benefit Star. There are plenty of Euro-Airlines in it as it is. Now if Virgin wanted to join, different story! 😉 Swiss would be good for OneWorld, however. I don’t see the big deal of them releasing that info to BA. Are they just being stubborn?

No-ones getting anything over on one another, if people started inventing the planes they had flown on just to impress that would be silly, but just documenting the types flown is hardly vain?
I also just remembered by Sikorsky S.61 and Bell Jetranger flights as well, very interesting 🙂

Pathetic as this may be, I can’t be remiss about posting my ‘short’ list of types flown:

Lockheed:
L-1011

Boeing:
727-200
737-200/300/400/500/700/800
747-100/200/300/400
757-200
767-200/300
777-200

Airbus:
A300-200/600
A310-200/300
A319
A320
A321

Douglas:
DC-9
MD-90
DC-10-10/40

Everything else:
CRJ
ATR42
Emb-120
Beech1900D
J31
J41
Piper Cherokee

There’s lots of overlap in terms of Airlines flown on particular types. I won’t even go there. Also, I might have flown on a 707 in 1976. This is still unconfirmed as I was 2 years old and I’m still hunting down timetables to confirm this.

I wouldn’t see much point of watching a screen on an RJ, when there is fantastic scenery below. This will be my 1st ERJ flight. Bhoy, wot everu say bout Swiss ERJ’s it won’t put me off.
P.S BHX tommoz can’t wait!

Not trying to put you off the ERJ, I had my first flight on one just two months ago, also LX, although it was only a 20 minute hop down to ZRH on the way to Barcelona. Nice little plane. I was on HB-JAJ.

Enjoy yourself.

Bit OT but i feel a bit hard done by. Everyone mentions their trips on all these aircraft where as all i have mustered in my sad pathetic life is A321, A320, A319, Boeing 737-300 and -700, Fokker 27 and Bae 146 🙁

Feel better, for my list is smaller

737-200
737-300
737-700
757-200
Dash-8
Avro RJ100 or BAe 146-200 (sabena, don’t know the EXACT type)

granted by one it is a shorter list, but none the less pathetic.

ok, just to expand on the ERJ/32S thing, The 320 series’ have the LCD screens so you’ve got something to do, ie watch the map and the fleet news they put up (no sound, though, which is maybe just as well when the obligatory Donald Duck Cartoons startup), whereas in the ERJ there’s not much to do.

I wouldn’t see much point of watching a screen on an RJ, when there is fantastic scenery below. This will be my 1st ERJ flight. Bhoy, wot everu say bout Swiss ERJ’s it won’t put me off.
