SWWAPS, Lasham

With the passing of its leading light, Bob Coles earlier this year, Does anyone know if the Second World War Aircraft Preservation Society at Lasham, is still open to the public?

Can anyone tell me what has happened on the Wessex? I know her fate is secure but was just wondering as I know someone who maybe interested in obtaining her for restoration??

Meteor F.8 fate

From what I have heard the F.8 may be going abroad as part of an exchange deal, but details are not yet confirmed.

There aren’t many original and complete F.8’s in the UK now and this is a good example being exported.

From being THE front-line jet of the early fiftes it is now reduced to just a few more than a handful left in the UK. A sad reflection of the lack of interest and lack of importance placed on this, although indifferently performing but nonetheless very notable aircraft type, being very unrepresented amongst surviving aircraft from that period.

Anon.

It might be a daft question now but what is the fate of the Meteor F8?

Cheers Dave,

I guess it’s back to the drawing board… What about the remaining aircraft?? What hasn’t got a home yet?

Hi all

Flew into Lasham yesterday (weather due to change so thought best make the most of a lovely afternoon)! Wandered down to SWWAPS – was a little dismayed.

Drover is disassembled but the wings were just piled on top of each other and with the recent melting snow and soft ground – shes sunk into the mud. Broken cockpit windows is letting water in.

Someone has tried to move the sea hawk up to the road with what looked like a truck but has succeeded in pulling the tyres off the rims on the left hand main and the right hand doesnt look too stable. Shes very damp with lots of condensation on the inside.

Wings are off the Sea Prince? with most of her component parts stored inside – but otherwise looks ok.

Wessex was still where shes always been.

Prentice wings were lying on the grass – no sign of fuselage

Saw the Starfighter on climbout over by the pond round the back of ATC Lasham

Hunter and Meteors still on their makeshift wooden stands.

Will probably be back up there next week so can take some pics if people wish

Just stopped for a quick look at whats happening at Lasham, not a lot really.
The SWWAPS site was padlocked shut with no one around.
The two Meteors, Hunter and Wessex are still complete. The Sea Hawk has the Stbd wing missing but is otherwise complete. The drover is in bits and just the wings of the Prentice are lying in the grass.

Hi all,

Not sure if this the best place to ask but I’m looking for photographs of the SWWAPS museum.

Having just rekindled my passion for scale modelling it would make a great diorama of what it once was.

Whats the latest, have all the aircraft and exhibits moved yet?

As above all gone including the potacabin museum building. I called in in passing on Sunday and missed it driving by first time. Even the fence between what was the museum grounds and the airfield has gone, not a trace left.

My motivation for asking was this thread on another forum.

http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=37471

BTW is the search function likely to be fixed as the only way I found this thread was dear old Google?

Looking at the pictures, looks to be the front end of the F.8

… What appeared to be the forward fuselage (cockpit area) of the Sea Hawk FGA.6 was lying on its side with the adjacent canopy removed and the nose cone missing..

wasn’t the Seahawk, thats in the yard at Booker.

It’s been well covered here that Parkhouse Aviation are doing the removal work and storing some of the airframes.
