Syrian Dragonfly

Noted on Demobbed is an image of a Royal Navy schemed Dragonfly in derelict in Syria in the late 1980’s. Does anyone know why it’s there?

History as is known by UK Serials:

f/f 14/05/1952, d/d 29/05/1952, to Fleetlands 19/12/1963 for storage until sold on 03/10/1965, transported to Blackbushe by 06/11/1965, to Wisbeach during 1968, to Limmassol, Cyprus during 06/1970, derelict at Jirah Airbase, Syria f/n 01/1978

Only become known to us when we were contacted by the son of the photographer – his father snapped it on one of his visits to the base…

According to serials in Westland Aircraft since 1915, it’s a HR. Mk3…andf was used by FAA’s 705 Squadron and “some station flights”.
Did the UK have bases in Syria during the 50s?

Perhaps donated to the government when withdrawn from use…or perhaps abandoned.

Interesting find, looks genuine enough, no idea why though.
