SYWELL AIRSHOW RETURNS FOR 2008
Sywell Aerodrome will again host its very popular biannual airshow on Sunday 24th August 2008 promising the usual mix of classic aircraft and family attractions ensuring a superb day out all in aid of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
For more information keep an eye on http://www.sywellairshow.co.uk for updates, acts, ticket details, trader applications and the latest news building up to the day itself!
This is our third in a row and should be better than ever – let us have your thoughts on what you’d like to see and what we can do to exceed your expectations!!!

Sorry I’ve been slow to reply to this one – been on a course for a few days and away from a PC.
Les B – your points are VERY valid. I/We made a distinct effort to sort out disabled/mobility impaired parking closer to the gate last time (the first year it wasnt thought about 😮 ) but didnt think about the somme like conditions…:o we are learning though mate and hope we can do something better for next year.
BM/LandS – no rocket bike!
EN830 – pissing myself laughing….:D
Ozplane – again i fully understand your point, it has been noted.
Unfortunately we cant please everyone all of the time, but as volunteers we do try and do our best. Unlike other venues which have hardstanding a go go, we have a grass drome which is only used for a ‘proper’ airshow every two years.
I was up at 0430 in full WW2 combat gear letting traders in when it was raining stairrods -I was absolutely soaked to the skin as Rob and Niall will tell you!
We DO want your feedback especially at this stage so we can PLAN AHEAD.
Be interested to hear from anyone who was particularly impressed by a display act – perhaps slightly off the beaten track.
At Sywell we do try to be a bit different… as stated above there are a few anniversaries next year.
A WW1 section is a must (if the chaps get off their bottom and finish the BE2!! 🙂 ) and the idea of, well if not an air race, a tail wander (if not a tail ‘chase’) by some period aircraft in a racing stylee is a lovely idea, and one which AH would have approved of I’m sure.
The 1930s feel of Sywell is at its heart though, there will always be a warbird element but not much modern kit, though if for variation you feel the need for a Typhoon – let us know!!! We really do rate your input chaps,
We have to balance acts with cost #1 vs how they fit into the show.
For example, I love the Huey, but as brilliant as it is, it doesnt really sit in with the 30’s feel and by its nature is quite expensive to operate and hence hire out. We trade off then between one act with impact like the Huey as against 1, 2, 3 or 4, smaller acts with lower running costs.
At the end of the day, the mission is to raise as much dosh for the Air Ambulance as possible. .. we are getting there but it takes time to LEARN from our mistakes and also to build up a following/goodwill…
Over to you lot!

That’ll be a short airshow then :-
“Ladies and Gentlemen from your left the Vulcan will do one pass”
Woosh
“Well there you go folks, along with budget, have a nice day and thank you for your support”.
My thoughts exactly, anyway we dont have any jets!!!! Suppose they could tow it to hight and do an engine off flypast, be cheeper that was to:D

Ollie I think you threw a number of your toys, would you like me to pick them up for you ???
You may if you have filled out all the correct risk assesment forms for health and safety. :p

I think that Ollie had been to a LPG event the previous day and he’d probably slept in them and forgotten to take them off.
It was not an event, a group i belong to had aranged a visit there to see them conduct a antident run.

Ollie, I’m amazed that you’re slagging off the commentator when he’s the editor of the magazine that pays for this place and allows you to post here for free. Since you spent much of the show wandering around wearing ear defenders (yes, you did look daft), how much did you actually hear?
I could not give a damm what i looked like. I had a raging headace that day and did not whant to make it worse. Im amased you have got nothing better to do than have a dig at me.

Sadly grass Airfield, torrential rain all morning, vehicles driving accross said grass equates to mud, and lots of it!!!!! The jobs worth you talk about were people doing what they had been asked to do, and given up there time for free. unfortunately opening gates willy nilly not only lets you in but a flood of people who constantly try and get in for nothing!!! This has happend on both the last two Airshows and as a result no profit was made on either of them, in fact a large loss was:( We are lucky that Sywell Aerodrome have agreeed to hold the show again, they bank roll the event and the last two years have given a donation to the Air Ambulance out of there own pocket. As a result access was restricted, and the gate you mentioned was foe emergency services access should there be an incident.
Im sorry if you had problems last time but i can assure you as the organisers who had invested months of our own time in putting on the event, to, A, watch the rain P down all morning, and then, B, have people doing all they can to get in for F**K all, your car getting muddy was the least of our worries 😡
Again i am sorry you had problems and we like to see the car clubs at the event and look fwd to seeing you there next year if you wish to come, hopefully the weather gods will be a little kinda to us next year, rant over:)

Backing up LesB’s comment, we were invited to display our classic cars at the last show but access to our display area was so churned up that several cars turned back at the gate. There is a gate near the Museum that could have been opened, which had hard access to the show area, but a whole series of jobsworths refused point blank to assist. I’ll have a hard job persuading them to come back in 2008 if there isn’t a bit more co-operation, always assuming you want us to provide some alternative interest for the non-aviation fans. By the way the show content was excellent but I’m still getting mud out of places I didn’t think it could get to.

Ear defenders? 😮
With all those lovely noises and barely a shrieking jet among them?Shame on you!! :diablo:
More anniversaries in 2008 of course.
90 years of the RAF. 90 years since the Armistice.
And 70 years since Alex Henshaw in the Mew Gull won the last pre-war Kings Cup air race. A 1930s air race reconstruction anyone? Count me in (slowly) with the Tipsy!!
And the 80th anniversary of the first Aerial Pagent at Sywell in 1928, you will all have to keep your eyes on the Airshow Website for details but some tasty morsles planned 😉

Maybe they weren’t ear defenders, maybe they were headphones, maybe he’s teaching himself gibberish ?????

Just as long as the geezer with the helio runs his engine up on the far side of the field this time, and not directly in front of me – it’s the only time I’ve watched a Spitfire display to the sound of rotor blades instead of a Merlin or Griffon.
I agree there to. But i found Ken Ellis commentry whilst the Catalina flew even more annoying, something to do with making your own flying boat i seem to remember from a drinks bottle.

– let us have your thoughts on what you’d like to see and what we can do to exceed your expectations!!!
TT, thanks for asking about this.
As I mentioned here after last year’s wonderful show (apart from the boggy, rain soaked grass), could the Sywell team make some effort to get the cars of blokes with motobility problems (or disabled badges – blue cards) nearer to or on some hardstanding? Not looking for anything more than an understanding about the problems inherent in trying to trundle an leccy scooter (or wheelchair) across wet grass, drained my batts last year, embarrassing, had to be pushed back to the carpark – not a pretty sight mate. Saw a couple of other blokes in much the same situation. Maybe some thoughtfully place PSP?
Of course it may not rain in the morning next year, but this is the UK – so it probably will!
As for what I’d like to see . . . a Canberra B(I)8 is out of the question I suppose! 😉 Seriously, last year Sywell gave a top show so same line-up would work for me.

I actualy realy enjoyed some of the more unusual acts last year. The Helicopter picking up the roadwork cone was very imprssive as well as the Hang Glider display.

Good news if this show will take place next year .
that makes 2 new shows maybe to add for 2008.

How about that bloke on a bicycle with a rocket tied to his back.
He seemed to disappear at the vital moment last year TT…..???? :diablo:
More seriously, having just seen the thread with the Antwerp Nieuport. How about inviting the Belgian contingent???
Or Michael Carlsson with the Bleriot???
A Vulcan flyby has been suggested elsewhere. Might be nice, but it might wake some of the worthy burgers of the nearby villages 😀
and as it has all ready bee pointed out to me it is the Centenary of the first powered flight in the UK i think the man on the bike is back in the frame:D
