Sywell Aviation Museum Ready for Takeoff for 2013! 30TH MARCH 2013
With the nights finally drawing out its time to announce the grand opening of the Museum forthe 2013 season which will take place as usual on Easter Saturday, 30th March 2013 from 10.30hrs. There will be re-enactors from our friends at the Pitsford Home Guard, military vehicles from the Troops Trucks and Stores Group and Military Vehicle Trust and, weather and servicability permitting, our good friend Peter Teichman will be bringing his fantastic North American P-51 Mustang ‘Jumpin Jacques’ for a special appearance!
Why the P-51? Well 2013 marks the 70th anniversary of the deployment of the 20th Fighter Group, United States Army Air Force to Kingscliffe, Northants in 1943. The Museum proudly displays their unique and fabulously rare original mission boards and the opening will serve as a backdrop to the unveiling of a specially commissioned Roll of Honour and commemorative bench in partnership with The 20th Fighter Group Association. After training on P-40 Warhawks and beginning ops with the P-38 Lightning, the 20th FG were equipped with the legendary Mustang so to mark the occasion with the warbird they used is really poignant. Hopefully our friend Tony Collins will also be bringing one of his superb cockpits to display as well!
Other aircraft are always welcome to fly in to see us at the opening….past surprise visitors have ranged from a Messerschmitt Bf108 to a WACO UPF, Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire…!
Above all, the whole event is a great day out for the whole family….and above all it’s free!
The Museum is now taking bookings for its popular weekday evening tours – Cubs, Beavers, U3A, local history groups, classic car clubs, Rotarians, social clubs and more have visited us over the years – for more information please contact us!
In addition we are always looking for items to display, particularly if relevant to Sywell or aviation in Northamptonshire together with military and aviation books or unbuilt model kits. Again, please contact us if you can help.
Please do keep an eye on our talks page for a list of our very popular evening lectures – ‘TSR2 – Britain’s Lost Bomber’ by Damien Burke on the 25th February and ‘Photographing the RAF’s Fast Jets’ by former Red Arrows official photographer Richard Cooke on the 25th March to name but two – more TBC…. http://www.sywellaerodrome.co.uk/museum-talks.php
From Easter, the Museum is open every weekend and bank holiday between 10.30-16.30hours until the end of September.
