Sywell Aviation Museum reopens 12th June 2021 with added 'bombed up' Russian Spitfire!

SYWELL AVIATION MUSEUM – REOPENING THIS SATURDAY
12th JUNE 2021
The Sywell Aviation Museum will reopen to the public for 2021 – this Saturday 12th June 2021 – hooray!
Normally we would host a ‘grand’ opening at Easter but that not being possible this year this will be a much smaller more informal affair
Gates open at 0930hrs and the Museum opens at 1030hrs. Visitors with classic/military vehicles are welcome to attend on an as and when basis. Jeeps will be parked along the front of the Museum – everything else in a row opposite as usual!
12th June is the 50th anniversary of our new Jetstream winning the Sywell to Biggin Hill Daily Express National Air Race on 12th June 1971 (as ‘Race #197’ – look at her newly applied numbers!) and to help celebrate, a fellow competitor in the race – Boeing Stearman G-AROY (‘Race #195’) will be joining us on site from Spanhoe so two fellow racers will be on site together for the first time in 50 years (many thanks to the Stearperson chaps! )
Also our old mate Peter Teichman is hopefully popping up to see us in his newly restored Supermarine Spitfire MK.IX PT879*
STOP PRESS – in recognition of the Museum’s help in building the replica 250lb bombs for her Pete has tasked an engineer specially to ‘bomb up’ the Spit so she will be fully armed – the FIRST TIME YOU’LL BE ABLE TO SEE HER LIKE THIS! What a top chap!
Refreshments will be available in the Pilots’ Mess and Aviator Hotel.
Important note on COVID:
– Please maintain social distance inside and outside the
Museum
– Inside the Museum we would ask that you bring and wear a
face covering (unless exempt from doing so)
– Please use the hand sanitizer on entry to the Museum
– We will be operating the NHS Test and Trace system – there is
a QR code prominently displayed in several locations in the
Museum for the NHS App – please leave your T&T contact
details on entry
– The Museum is in wartime Nissen huts – it can get busy and
quite cramped – you may have to wait your turn before going
inside so we’re not too packed.
– After months of COVID y’all know the drill – please use
common sense
PLEASE NOTE PARKING IS LIMITED AND IS ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS – ONCE THE MUSEUM CAR PARK IS FULL IT IS HOPED THAT THE FIELD OPPOSITE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR OVERFLOW PARKING IF REQUIRED
Entry is free but we welcome your donations – there are plenty of secondhand books and models to rummage through too on our stall outside!
The Museum will then be open as usual every weekend and bank holiday between 1030-1630hrs and also on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1200-1600hrs until the end of September.
For more information please email – sywellaviationmuseum@gmail.com
*Please note aircraft attendance is dependent on serviceability and weather.

My first visit for many a year and a good day out that appeared to be very well attended. The standard of the museum displays is really impressive. Good to see the Hunter and Jetstream there too.

I just wondered if someone could put a chain saw to good use in front of the cafe!?

I’ll have a word with the other ‘alf and make a note in the diary for this Saturday /  Sunday.

Thanks for the heads up.
