T.4 Harrier ID………

Hi,

I have just purchased ‘British Harriers……. Part 1: GR.1/RG.3/T.2 and T.4 of the Royal Air Force in Germany’ by M. Herbote and Wilfried Zetsche.(airDOC aircraft documentations ADP 014)

I’m interested in identifying the T.4 in the last two pages of detailed photos. From the tail code ‘U’ it seems to be XW268/U of 233 OCU pictured on page 27…. but could the photos be of more than one aircraft? (the first four photos on page 67 are of ‘U’, but the bottom two and the following photos on page 68 might be of another aircraft).

I’m asking because I have a complete stick and grip from ‘XW268’ but it is a different type to that shown in the photos of the rear cockpit.

Were the grips changed when upgrades were made from T.2, T.2A, T.4 ect?
or
Did the aircraft have a normal GR.1/T.2/GR.3 grip in the front cockpit (like mine) and the type shown in the photos in the rear cockpit?

Nozzle operation

If you still have a samsu fitted all you need is a compressor and a feed to the samsu air input the nozzle lever should do the rest in the cockit, we test them this way in the hanger all the time, the system is still the same set up on GR7/9 these days

we have an engine, that being a plus πŸ™‚ as she’s inside we obviously cant power the engine up is there any other way to rotate the nozzles whilst still maintaining the cockpit connection?

Nashio- Doing the hydraulic systems is pretty straighforward. The nozzles are a little more problematical as you need an engine installed and some way of substituting the air that’s supplied from the engine to the SAMSU .

i wasnt expecting anyone to give anything πŸ™‚ my course does have a budget for various things, which is why i need to get a positive yes before anything can be done πŸ™‚

when XW270 was at cranfield, she was treated pretty brutally from what ive heard, and if you look around in the airframe the amount of chopped wires and missing parts make this fairly apparent, still hoping that at least something could be done with her πŸ™‚

david thankyou for your offer, we are currently making a list of parts that would be needed for our ideas, and still have to be cleared by various higher ups, but should have a basic shopping list by the middle of next week. our aim is to eventually restore some power to various systems etc, ie be able to rotate the nozzles and extend various flight controls.

Hi Ben,

sorry, the only parts for Harriers I have are my control stick from XW268 and an altimeter from XZ146, as you can probably guess Harrier parts are a bit scarce over here in Norway!

talking about T.4 harriers, i was wondering if anyone knew anything more about my universities harrier XW270, she’s missing a considerable amount of parts, if anyone could point me in a direction to any of the missing components, it would be greatly appreciated.

the rear cockpit is almost bare
the rear ejector seat is pretty much bare
looking for various internal parts to complete the hydraulic systems for the flight surfaces so that some pressure could be restored and movemement achiever

BUCKETLOADS of panel fixing screws/bolts

any help would be massively appreciated

You will be pleased to hear this Harrier T4N still exists. It can be found at the Norwich Aircraft Museum, and is owned by a friend of mine Dan Lander.

Being a trainer it had two columns, so maybe the front is a different design to the rear?

yes, I think it might have had a GR.1/GR.3 type grip in the front, and the other grip type in the rear. I’d like to see photos of other T.4 aircraft and see if they have the same grips in both crew positions.

I have a lot of photos of XW268 at Norwich Aircraft Museum both external and internal views, not so nice to look at after seeing this lovely aircraft in it’s ‘better days’! (I try not to look at them! );)
