T.V.

Do you think it’s time to end paying for the T.V. Reciever Licence?.And letting advertising pay for it?.

Just slightly off topic – what will happen to black and white licences for those that prefer to watch on older sets?

As I understand it, digi-boxes are receivers (which is what the licence is paid for) and to the best of my knowledge, there are no b&w only digi-boxes.

On a similar vein, what if someone keeps their old non-digi telly and just watches DVDs, will the licence dodger crews have to accept this in the future?

I quite enjoy Radio 1 😮 until one of the presenters open there mouth…

Seconded. I seem to spend more time listening to Radio 2, where some of the old Radio 1 bods from my younger days now hang their ear phones.

Or local BBC Radio which, although it isn’t meant to be funny genuinly is one of the funniest things on air for all the wrong reasons.

I seldom watch TV, but!

Please, no more bl00dy adverts… As I ranted about on another thread (now buried in the depths somewhere), the annoying thing about ’em is the fact that they are louder than the damn programme that they interrupt.

Don’t get me started on Sky TV – I told that lot to “foxtrot-oscar” a while back. Due to there being more repeats than a cucumber and lettuce sandwich.
I gave their door-to-door coldcaller a similar response two evenings ago…! :dev2:

Well, girls, we have radio 2 on everytime we are in the car, and in the afternoons. I think its the best to listen to, AND I have my wifes permission to say so :p and why? Cos we don’t have to listen to the same old repeats as in T.V. every day.

We will agree to disagree about radio 2 and without doubt there is an audience for it all. But that is not an argumant for not changing anything. It’s just that I see the BBC as a quite different institution and that is why I would change it.

Patten seems to be shaping up to be a rather more pro-active Chairman or whatever the job is now entitled, so I am sure we will see the dust being churned up a bit over the coming months.

Would the spotify business model work with commercial tv, you can watch stuff for free but get the adverts, pay a fee and get it without the adverts, not quite sure how it could be implemented but it’s a though.

No because certain restraints would still have be in place to satisfy audiences, share holders, and potential advertisers.
As an example most of the stories about say the X Factor scandals in the newspapers etc are ‘pumped up’ so as to increase advertising and thus revenue for the broadcaster.
The model that the BBC works to dosen’t have to worry about any of those constraints, as long as it educates and entertains.

Completely disagree about R2, nothing else matches it SH.
But we can’t argue about what we personally like or dislike as regard the output, that is utterly pointless as there is an audience for all of it.

Well of course 3 and 4 would stay, as I previously posted, as well as ,local radio, which is minimal costs in the scale of things, but 2’s output is covered across a swathe of local and national pop/light/music stations.

Radio 4 would still produce good comedy – if it could. Most of the current radio comedy is pretty dire, I would say.

I am sure most of the actors in all the other soaps would disagree with you. Anyway working hard is what actors are paid large sums of money to do, isn’t it?

No, you are right – there is nothing like the BBC at all levels, which is why I want to change it, because I do not believe we should have to pay for it all.

There aren’t any radio stations that come close to R2, 3, & 4 or indeed the regional BBC radio stations.
Commercial radio really is dire, playing the same stuff over and over (to appease share holders and audiences alike), dreadful adverts every 10-15 minutes, and no decent news, travel, weather, and shipping info.
And getting back to the comedies, let’s not forget that most of them started on the radio.
Even things like East Enders, I hate it, I dare say you do, but it is a well produced programme who’s actors work harder than anyone in the business and it appeals to a huge audience.

I’m sorry but when you get down to the guts of it there isn’t anything like the Beeb at all levels and it has to be payed for, the licence fee being the farest way.

I’ve just cacelled Sky, mainly due to finacial reasons but also because me and the missus sat down and worked out that there ias absloutely nothing to watch on it, in fact the things we actually missed where BBC repeats!

Here’s a question though, increasingly we are having TV streamed to computors through broadband cables, their are computors being built with TV reception and playback as being important and indeed TVs which double as computors.
If one chosse this as the sole way of recieving TV stations, do you still need to pay the licence?

Pagen – let me more specific. In my revamped BBC there would be a basic news website, nothing more nothing less. And radios 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 would be scrappped. The commercial sector already provides 75% of radios 1 and 2, 5 wasn’t missed before it was created, 6 is another provider of music, some of which can be found elsewhere, if not any commercial broadcaster worth its salt will take it on and 7 no longer exists having been created into 4 extra, which few people seem tlo listen to.

I only posted that item as some gentle fun.

I don’t for one minute disssagree with you, and whilst not pleading poverty, being an a fixed budget, I realy do think £145.. is a lot of money for some folks, on top of everything else we have to fork out for.
I for one am dreading the cost of my gas and electric fuei bills next year.

Well that’s another thing I don’t get people moaning about £145 a year for a nice luxury, but no one seems to mention the lifes essentials like the gas and electric which is rocketing up to stupid levels, and the daily shop going up aswel.

SH whether you like the radio and the website or not, it is completely irrelvant, the fact is is that the radio service (R2-4 for sure 1, 5 & 6 have their place!) is an excellent one and the site (especially the news) is highly respected and relyed on by some.
As for the ‘chair champion’ that sounds like a union driven thing, something that invades most public bodies I’m afraid, even the control tower where I work and where all the otherwise good swivel seats have just been changed because they had to go from four legs to five on safety grounds!

But thats off topic, however we have to take everything into consideration these days.My son in Law pays £67.00. Per for Sky TV, and inflation is running at an all time high.My main gripe is all the repeats.
