Tail Configurations

Hello everyone, I’m an aviation student and i’m trying to find why different tail configurations are used, and why companies like to stay with those configurations. For instance, Slab Tails are used in supersonic aircraft because of decreased drag, but they do not have any trim on it.. I was wondering if anyone has information like this for other tail configurations. Or they could lead me to where i can find this information. This type of information is hard to get a hold of, because all the aerodynamic or plane design textbooks try to explain through equations. Thank you, Dan
