Tail Wheel AH7180

Can any of you knowledgeable chaps advise which English aircraft used a tail wheel with the part number AH7180? Much appreciated.

Innocent till proven guilty. Wouldn’t all the dambuster’s tailwheels have to be accounted for in order to prove that it isn’t?

P+P and I have been chatting about the wheels on the phone – one more piece of info emerged

Stores Ref number appears to be T27A/1399 – The T may simply be the Australian designation of the A.M. number . I have had a hunt around online but not come up with anything yet

Anyone able to narrow this down ?

Ain’t Mossie

I would like to concur with my esteemed colleague that the tail wheel AH10191 I got from him was Mosquito made by Kelsey of Canada, which concurs with a number of mainwheels found in the antipodes, also by Kelsey of Canada. AH10191 also concurs with Mosquito AP’s tailwheel codes for all variants, so what we have is a concourse of concurrence, a cooroboree of corrobation, resolving this occluded occurrence.

However, I would like to say I reckon that AH 7180 ain’t Mosquito for the following reasons :

1) The Mosquito tailwheel is an 8.00-5 wheel, being 5 inch wheel. Below is a Mosquito with Mastrand tyre :

2) The 7180 wheel, with the protruding ‘belly button’ around the axle, has a 9.00-5 1/4 Mastrand tyre on this one, found in Australia. So this is a stronger, larger wheel, more meat, more axle support :

3) Mastrand type on RAN Sea Vixen nose wheel, 7.50-5 1/2, showing ‘belly button’. Again a meatier wheel than the Mosquito tailwheel, to cope with deck landings, tricycle U/C dynamics :

So even thought he RAN Sea Vixen, courtesy of Moorabbin Air Museum, shows a slightly different size to 7180, I think the 7180 belongs to the postwar deHavilland twin boom jet family. Certainly in Australia that covers Vampires of UK and domestic origin, Sea Vixen.
Somebody with more Vampire knowledge will have to concur, or negate with niggardley negative Nellie nonsense

Thanks guys for all the info – the other DH98 tailwheel in the collection I referred to was AH7049 and was a Canadian made one (can’t remember the name) I will see what else I can find in the Museum Technical Library with relation to the numbers, The “teeth” on the inner certainly look Mossie though. A good mystery to have !

Hi Ewan,
Ahhhh !! Thanks for posting those nice ,clear pics. of the Tailwheel. After enlarging and rotating pics. Could not find any numbers to match the Dunlop AH Wheel (UK) system we know, but did notice that there are a few embossed numbers in the castings, which I’ve never seen on UK aircraft during my Tyre bay Mob time. That makes me think this wheel is Aussie manufactured, WW2 period and I agree with Bruce. My hunch is Mossie too. Best I can come up with, hope this helps. And same for you 43-2195, Fairey Battle tailwheel no is:- AH 5023. (Wheel size 4.95″x 3-1/2″ ) I did see one on evil Bay in the dim distant past, which doesn’t help now of course.
Best of luck with the hunt and the sale guys.

Thanks Ewan, That was the reason for my asking. I suspected it might be Fairey Battle, but it seems that I am wrong. Thank you very much Trolly Aux, WV-903 and Bruce for your assistance. Trumper, Oily rag I am very sorry if my second post came across as rude and/or abrupt. I certainly did not mean to offend. I have a very weak knowledge of the subject and suspect quite a few members here know (some) AH numbers by memory.

I’m guessing its the wheel I have up on evilbay at the moment. I had a look around but could not find anything on it. It was in a lot of four one being a DH98 tailwheel in great condition which I gave to Powerandpassion – heres a few pics with all the info I could find on them (I didnt want to look like a plank and ask for all the info just to shove up on auction, I do try and avoid taking advantage of others help ):

The inner rim appears to be AHO2066, cannot tell and I am a long way from home.

Hi 43-2195,
I’ve looked through my Dunlop Wheels list and nothing is there on AH 7180. As Trolley Aux mentions, can you post pics. of wheel and give any more details ?

Seriously? Not a single response? Aren’t there manuals that allocate AH part numbers to specific aircraft? I’ve seen control column tops identified meticulously here on this website previously using AH numbers. No one can assist?_

Blimey this was only posted for 2 days,it is half term here and people may be on holiday or because of the time difference not see this post. This is hardly the way to get help by being so rude.
