Tailwheel question

Afternoon all.

A friend of mine turned around this afternoon and asked if I would recognise a Hurricane tail wheel. I advised him that it has been 19 years since I held such an item, but I would try and help him identify what he had.

The wheel has the following details stamped on the valve half:

DRG no
AHO 5023/1
ISSUE 15

SERIAL No
J F 89431. (the F is twice the size of the other letters/numbers)

The bearing retaining ring has what appears to be an Inspectors stamp with

DR
763

In a circle.

The obverse side has the same serial number, another number
SM 510B
2

There is also a stamped circle with the letters NHT inside.

Covering the wheel is an AERO tyre, 4.95 – 3 1/2.

Oh, did I mention he has a second wheel and tyre assembly, same drawing number wheel, and same size AERO tyre?

Anyone know what these would have been fitted to?

Trolly Aux,
Thanks for that. Much appreciated. I have passed it on. The owner is a PPL, and has an interest in things historic, including his 1970 Trident, 1968 Norton, and 1930’s Wolesley. And he does my MOT’s. And we have known each other for over 40 years, but there was a gap of 25…but that is another story.

These two wheels, complete with tyres were in the boot of a car that his dad bought. They advised the previous owner that he had left a couple of “go-kart” wheels in the car, and he said “it’s OK, keep them”. This was about 20 years ago.

WV 903, greetings and salutations old friend. Happy New etc. I will pass on to my friend the other fits. I suspect these may end up near his mantelpiece, now he knows what they are.

Thanks again guys.

Hi Camlobe, salute !!!,
Hope all is well at your end M8. 🙂 Confirm with Trolly Aux that Dunlop Hub No:- AH 5023 is indeed Fairey Battle Tailwheel and it’s also Swordfish Tailwheel and Fulmar 1 and 2 Aircraft tailwheels. ( From my Dunlop List. ) I’m pretty sure that AERO Tyres were another name for PALMER Tyres, which would also fit with period of these Hubs. Amazing what keeps turning up 70 years+ on from WW2. Keep on trucking M8.

Tell friend that Hurricane tailwheel Hubs are:- AH 5000 (Tyre size:- 4″x 3.5″ )
