Taiwan Navy To Get U.S. Warships Ahead of Schedule

Taiwan Navy To Get U.S. Warships Ahead of Schedule
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, TAIPEI

Taiwan’s navy will receive two Kidd-class guided missile destroyers from the United States next year, six months ahead of schedule, a legislator said Sept. 14.

The delivery of two out of four second-hand destroyers on order was expected in the second half of 2005, “about half a year ahead of schedule,” Sun Kauo-hwa, a parliamentarian from the opposition Kuomintang party, told Agence France-Presse.

Analysts say the warships will boost the island’s air defenses against rival China’s fast-growing naval fleet.

The faster-than-expected delivery of the destroyers was due to the assistance of 400 personnel from Taiwan in overhauling the ships at a U.S. naval shipyard in Charleston, S.C., Sun said.

The warships “would be a big boost to Taiwan navy’s air defense capability, considering (China’s) powerful air defense capability,” said Sun, who was fresh from a visit to the shipyard.

He said Taiwan’s navy was badly needed of the destroyers, to be armed with ’SM-2 Standard’ missiles and a system capable of simultaneously tracking dozens of incoming airborne threats.

The surface-to-air missiles have a range of 144 kilometers (90 miles) and vastly outperform the ‘Standard I’ missiles on Taiwan’s Perry-class frigates.

The Kidd warships “would boost the navy’s surveillance capabilities, and provide Taiwan with a maritime anti-missile platform,” said Tamkang University professor Wung Ming-hsien. “As the software installed on the Kidd-class destroyers provides coordinated interfaces with the US military, it would cut short the time of U.S. military intervention should war break out in the Taiwan Strait.”

China in 1996 lobbed ballistic missiles into the shipping lanes of Taiwan to intimidate the island’s voters not to vote for then president Lee Teng-hui who was seeking another four-year re-election. The crisis ended only after the United States sent two battle carrier groups to waters off Taiwan in an apparent warning Beijing not to invade the island.

Taiwan acquired the four 9,600-tonne warships as part of an arms package offered to the island by US President George W. Bush in April 2002. The other two Kidd-class destroyers are scheduled to be delivered to Taiwan in 2006.

The deal, which followed a two-year review by the United States of Taiwan’s air force and navy, has infuriated China, which opposes any arms sales to the island. China regards as part of its territory. Taiwan and China split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.

Anyone have details of what the refurbed and modernized Kidds will have?

On paper, their Tien Kung 2 SAM system appears good enough, and if data is to be believed, it could be one of the best SAMs in the world. Up to 200km in range, has a dual active radar guided and IR seekers, and is guided by a phase array called Chang Bai, which can track about 100 targets and engage 24 simultaneously. That appears to be beat the crap out of the PAC and AEGIS/SN-2 system.

Aurel: Mate they Taiwanese were interested in the Collins but that deal was squashed because of Australia’s “One China” policy in any case, it’s probably a good thing, look at the problems we’ve had with them!

As I wrote, which western country would sell to Taiwan except the U.S. ? Reading the latest news from France, then they won’t. Italy has only a contract from HDW to build the U-212 for their own fleet. Scandinavian countries have nothing new, and they have also very strict export laws. Australia won’t as you wrote, too.
If they are really interested in something new, then the U-212/214, the Scorpene and the Collins are the only possibilities. Or is there anything else ? Maybe the Dolphins built for Israel ?

What they really need in my opinion is an effective new SAM system to protect the Island from those massive numbers of Chinese ballistic missiles and to keep the Flankers away from their bases/ports.

Anyways, I usually don’t respond to trolls and liars unless they amuse me. And you have lost your amusement value. Good day.

“Can smell a rat half a mile away???” 😀 😀 Well, here
may just be one such case of a rat half a mile away.

So anyway what’s the latest on the subs for the RoCN? They were to get 8 from a US yard but the US haven’t built D/E boats in decades.

Such great prose and hyperbole…
It would be a shame for me to respond and ruin such great prose. Also, it’s fun to see ediwhatshisname try to come up with more great prose and psychological mumbo-jumbo.
:diablo:

Haha!!! ediwhatshisname???? 😀 😀 :D….

With your “distinctively creative” slogan, Vic, I thought you
were much much more imaginative than ”ediwhatshisname”. Therefore, I must say —
I am greatly disapointed in you, Vic. My lack of vision I guess.

Anyway, Vic! Have you ever heard of the popular
saying 😀 😀 “Can smell a rat half a mile away???” 😀 😀 Well, here
may just be one such case of a rat half a mile away.

“Hate for the plain and simple purpose
of jumping in on the hate-badwagon is, IMHO, sheer fiddle-faddle
state of mind and simplicity of purpose!!!!”

For curiosity sakes and simply for the fun of it:

How so, Vic, has Kim threatened your home
country
( 😀 what country???? 😀 ), and, with of all things, what you
have described as his useless Ding Dong(s) 😀 ???

Hypes, bandwagons, Vic, is a funny thing. It’s extremely
addictive. We don’t even realize that we’ve been afflicted-consummed-ravaged by it
until we’ve been told that it’s no more but an in-thing!!!

And, Kim has threatened
my home country with his Ding Dong missiles. That’s reason
enough for him to be on my honored list.

Hey Vic,

While it amazes me how interested you are of the going’s on’s of the Island of
Taiwan rather than of the bickerings of your own neck of the woods 😀 “which I have a feeling
too are Asia but not of East Asia”
:D; I somehow can not understand the logics as to why you would also
follow blindly the hate mongering of Korea with your slogan “Kim you’re next”???

I mean what has Kim ever done to you to deserve 😀 the honor 😀 you are giving him???
.

I am very interested in the goings on in that part of the world 😉

Instead of having more ships, would it be more cost effective for ROC to have a large number of mobile land based, long range ASM batteries to keep the PLAN at arm’s length?

Why buy ticos without VLS when the US will be decommisioning Arleigh Burkes soon.

think they already have plenty of shore-based AShMs as well as lots of air launched versons.

but the problem with relying completely on these systems is that they cant be of much help if the PLAN decide to blockade the island. this is a particularly serious threat to taiwan as it is completely reliant on the sea for its economic well being and servival.

Hahahahaha now that’s a rather interesting thought mate! Personally I feel that Taiwan has been it’s own place since before I was born so there for it is it’s own country now despite what the mainland think or feel.

I also feel that Billy boy should do another term in office, what he did for the world during his time in office really did make a difference in the world, the ME was actually talking at the table, China was a great friend to the US and Russia was openly trading with them, what better way could there have been?

lets stear clear of polictics here guys, there’s never a good end to that road.

Hey! Don’t get me wrong, Mate! I mean I also love
the Guy and have plenty confidence in his bringing the NASDAQ back
up to the 4000 point bracket again
😀 – next term.

Do you believe in a 🙁 “One-America” 🙁 policy???
I.e., the “Kerry plus GW America”, verses a “Kerry verses
GW America”
for examples :p ??? Just a thought!

The U.S. tried to get German submarines for Taiwan, but the export was denied.
Don’t know any source for western SSK’s, willing to deliver to Taiwan.
