Taiwanese submarines

Anyone know the status of the Taiwanese Navy’s sub program? They EVER gonna get more than the 2 Dutch boats?

some more photos of ROCN’s 2nd Kidd class destroyer.

Are Aegis Crusiers far behind? 😮 Which, would fit in nicely with the ex-Kidd Destroyers. 😀

The USA does have a one year lease on the Swedish Gotland Class Submarine. That could be interesting news for Taiwan.

Well if the US really does want Taiwan to be able to defend itself, or at least do so better than it can do currently, it’ll have to realise the difficult political situation that the Taiwanese government is in. Simply hoping that the KMT will change their mind, when they probably won’t, isn’t going to get the money. A “special discount”, especially given that maintaining the status quo in Taiwan is so important to the US, would not be a bad thing.

There needs to be a massive sweetner for which ever country the US gets to build them (the chinese have managed very successfully thus far to put other countries of selling them) or the US is going to have to cover alot of R&D and design costs (when was the last time the US built a dielsel-electric sub?)
Not to mention the fact that Taiwan is a captive market-who else has been selling them arms recently? even the french have stopped.

It’s a bad buy none the less… no matter if the KMT wanted weapons purchase when they were in power.

Politics aside, frankly these subs are not worth what Taiwan would be shelling out…

Could they not just get them off-the-shelf from someone else for cheaper?

As of now sub deal is delayed, meaning god knows when they will become operational…

Well at least Taiwan has made the sensible choice to include the Orions and PAC-3 in the standard defence budget. That also does make the purchase of subs in the future easier. It’s a shame that the US can’t/won’t lower the price tag.

Good question actually. If the submarines are so expensive, why are they so expensive?

I don’t think 641s are good boats nowadays.
Even the indians had pretty good records with them, this is more related to crew efficacity then the platform really.

China will interfer with everybody trying to sell any hardware to Taiwan.
Yes, Taiwan tried and still is trying hard to get a hanfull of subs, but the economical risks at stack makes any contender think twice, then back off.

Now, we are in an area of consensus.
USA are not really supporting Taiwan more then verbally, but at the same time, for many more or less obvious reasons, China can’t move either. Status quo.
So Taiwan is not too much at risk so far.

If Taiwanese ppl decides to reunite with the mainland (which can’t seriously happen under the present government in China), then they won’t need subs.

Wasn’t the Moray supposed to have been ordered for the RoCN? I remember the American’s wanted us to build some Collins class for the RoCN but with the troubles we’ve had that got canned.

Anyway, Foxtrot beats all.

You might want to back that argument up with some hard facts. Otherwise you’ll just be considered as another flagwaving nationalistic teenager and we have enough of those as is.

Cliff

The two HaiLung have been upgraded lately to highest standard.
I have pix in a magazine here. The look rather new. The hull paint is shinning and all.

Yes, very lately they had at least one exec with the USN.

Yes, I forgot the tremendous 641. A sub of the future, uh? LOL! 😀

That’s a breaking news! Can any one confirm this: ROCN Sub did exec with USN. All I know is the ROCN did send observors to US and Japan exercises. But actually sending main combat unit to have joint exec, I never heard of that.

Also, according to you, the 2 HaiLung have been upgraded lately to HIGHEST standard. Do you have any details, beside the paint works?

What is 641? Anyway, Foxtrot beats all.

Oh, when did ROCN excercise with US and Japan?

Last time I heard about their subs was they could not manage to fire their torpedoes very well. That certainly can’t beat Foxtrot, which is superior to everything.

They just got out of a major refit, and did marvelous in the last Ex with the US and Japan. Good training, good doctrine. Ennemy I would fear to have to fight, even with 70+ romeos!

Maybe they should see if Russia would be willing to sell some Kilos for hard cash……wouldn’t THAT be interesting?!

And **** off their primary client in the process? Not likely…

BTW this is a rumor spread by the corrent Taiwanese government through semi state controlled media to spur some interest in the public for the arms purchase. Nothing substancial to say the least…

Stop me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the KMT screaming for the weapons the US was going to sell Taiwan when they were still in charge? As far as I know the opposition is just political grandstaging – plus having a bit of a temper tantrum because they thought they had the presidential elections in the bag.

well that wasn’t my point.
