Take off – Bristol Airport's £150m expansion plans approved – with 70 conditions

Bristol’s Airport’s £150 million expansion plans have been given the green light.

North Somerset Council yesterday approved the plans, subject to 70 different conditions.

But the final decision on whether the airport development – which will be phased over ten years – finally goes ahead will lie in the hands of the Government.

The Communities and Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles, will decide whether to re-examine the council’s decision – as part of the development is in the green belt and against the council’s own planning policy – or to allow the authority’s decision to stand.

And campaigners against the expansion say they may take court action over the decision to award planning permission.

The airport says the expansion will create 3,500 new jobs, inject £200m into the local economy and see an estimated increase in

visitor spending in the region of £1.1 billion.

As part of the permission, passenger numbers will be capped at ten million and a restriction placed on the number of night flights.

Expansion plans were initially announced in 2006 as part of the airport’s master plan.

The detailed application was submitted in April last year and prompted more than 5,000 objections.

It includes a hotel, a multistorey car park, improved transport links and onsite renewable energy generation.

Work could start as early as this year but is not expected to be completed until 2019 at the earliest.

Bet the NIMBY’s/eco-mentalists aren’t going to be happy with this…!

Personally for me, BRS deserves to be expanded as there should be more of an emphasis on making use of regional airports, rather than trying to expand an already over-crowded airport such as LHR.

Oh, the only condition I would put on this expansion though is that EZY wouldnt be allowed to expand services…don’t think I could handle another one of Bristol_Rob’s all “orange” photo threads…!:D:diablo: (Sorry Rob, only joking mate!;))

You love my all orange photo Threads really, When we was at Heathrow the other week that was all you was going on about, Dont lie now 😉 😛

The hotel and the improved transport links are a must. The Holiday Inn ‘Bristol Airport’ is really too far from the airport to be called an airport hotel. And, as for improved transport links, the airport could do with them even now. For those wanting to use public transport, they have a choice of just two buses; one operates only a few times during the day, whilst the other is ridiculously expensive!

i use Filton for business, and have heard that it has lost its capability to hold an airshow, because planes cannot turn with in the boundary of the airfiled anymore, so much has been sold off. But on day when i was there RR rolled out their Griffin powered Spitfire and did a few fly pasts for Saudi people leaving on a Gulfstream.
as for built up areas, yes the “Stokes” are close, but recently part of the RR plant at the North East end of the runway has been flattened, so both approaches are now building free for at least 1/4 mile at each end.

Except for Filton’s proximity to residential areas of course, making BRS the less offensive option to a larger part of the population.

Filton was ideally situated at the end of the Concorde programme before the building of Bradley Stoke this is when it should have been put forward.

The new housing development on the edge of the airfield will probably result in the airfield being lost to flying in the medium term.

There is a real risk that the JR results in relation to Heathrow may lead to this application being ‘called-in’ for the Government to assess, regardless of the local authority’s decision, so the road ahead may not be clear yet.

As for 70 conditions, that’s not that many really, especially as many will be menial such as those which require works abutting public highways to have highway authority permission etc, which are minor, this is just part of the territory for such large applications.

Its a shame Filton was overlooked, much better location
