'Tante Ju' at Norwich.

I hope this is the correct place for this ? But this afternoon we, at Norwich, were pleased to welcome this amazing old aircraft ! Stopping overnight as part of a long crossing from Canada to Switzerland.
If my information is correct ? one member of the crew may be a bit of a ‘celeb’ !! more of that later …. a few of my photos for now ….

Keith.

I just found several videoclips of the Ju 52, link is to the one showing approach Norwich (part 2), you will find clips of departure and others as well. Well worth watching.

Thanks James ! Yes it looked very good (not too much oil on the cowlings !) and sounded better than most ‘boy racer’ BMW’s ever do ! Hope to get some better photos upon it’s return journey ???

Yes, really. Two of them.

One with the lettering in English, and one with it in German.

Ju-Air operate 4 aircraft, although I believe one of them is due to be retired and used for spares.

Two of them?

Here we are with some more information: http://www.rimowa-in-the-air.com/northamerica/home/

Hey I followed that link and if you click through to the “The JU 52” page there’s a youtube link. Great little vid and either someone’s having some creative fun with the video or there are two of them!

Really?

There was a German-schemed one, with a gas-powered machine gun mounted in the top hatch, based with Jeff Hawke at Rochester in the 1980s. I seem to remember that it was wrecked in Germany whilst being used as a crew trainer for the Lufthansa one.

May also have been Aces High’s example.

This one, perhaps? This photo was taken at Brize Norton in 1984. It is now preserved at Sinsheim.

Would have loved to have spotted this one en route.

I do remember seeing a Casa 352? years ago, 1980s??, routing North just inland from the Lincolnshire coast, passing over Mumby, E Lincs. It was in German military scheme. I have a feeling it was late August or Sept…but don’t recall the year.
It was certainly a surprise sighting and in those pre internet days I still have no idea which one it would have been and where from/to….although some years later I did find an entry in a magazine of one such arriving at Newcastle.? on ferry with oil problem on an engine…..??

Great pictures Keith. Nice to see this grand old machine sitting outside the Saxonair facility last night. All being well it’ll be back at Norwich in August on its return trip. At 100 kts it’s going to be a long trip to Oshkosh and back to Dubendorf!

Oh dear !! I must humbly apologize …. total inacurate statement, it is travelling west today, left NWI at 10:00 heading for Wick and onwards !
I gathered small snippets of info from many sources, including Jeff skiles blog, put those all together and came up with Bla Bla Bla 🙁

To answer Newforest, yes I too thought it strange that if it had already completed this crossing that nobody had seen or heard about it ??

Must just post photos and leave the clever words to you knowledgeable folk ??

Sorry for the confusion !

Keith 😉

Reminds me of the time I saw the Lufthansa aircraft flying over Edinburgh. Couldn’t quite believe what I was looking at…!

edit, having seen the website and the routing across the atlantic, she would have most likely been just doing an en-route overflight of the airport before continuing North. A few transiting aircraft get permission to overfly particularly if they are interesting types, whereas most regular stuff either has to fly out to sea or miles to the west….

Good to see those fine pictures Keith. I have seen it 3 times recently, the last being on 14 May on its way into Geneva. It’s a great sight, and an almost greater sound!
