Target designation pod in air-to-air role

A French Air Force pilot on exchange with the French Navy contributed an excellent article to the latest issue of the AFM about the French carrier Charles de Gaulle’s deployment to the Indian Ocean last year.

According to him, the UAE Air Force’s latest Mirage 2000-92 was ‘a tough opponent’ for the French Navy Rafale in the air-to-air training and the UAE Mirages used the Damocles targeting pod for visual identification in the air-to-air role.

I heard an F-15E in the 1991 Gulf War recorded another F-15E flying in front of it being shot down by Iraqi AAA with its LANTIRN pod. So it might be nothing new to use target designation pod in air-to-air. But does anybody know how far could a Damocles or any other new target designation pod identify a MiG29-sized target in the air?

Thanks in advance,
Sunho
