TFF had two F1A Lightnings that separated 29 Squadron Line and 56/111 Squadron line when I was based on 29 in the late 60’s.
On the fin of the two Frightnings was a painting [circular in design] and within was a picture of a cat walking away from you with its tail in the air, I think this was called Jinx after the cartoon character.
I’m sure someone somewhere has a picture of this ‘logo’, any takers? I was always a bit surprised that the Powers to be at WTM permitted this but it was always regarded as great fun

Back 0n thread
A shot of a Watt TFF aircraft- The F1s didnt last too long and were replaced by the improved F1A= these often used as static and solo aero’s at airshows- The Dayglow cat was often on the tail or nose. Jinx is on the nose in Dayglo Sticker

Yes, that one!
‘cept my cat (or is it a Tiger?) appears to have a red hatchet buried in its neck – not that it seems to be bothered!
So it seems to have originated with the 74sqn fitters then?

The description of said Cat in John Cooper’s post reminded me that a similar logo had been painted on the LH intake of Phantom ZE352 at some time during its career. ‘352 was based at Wtm, if that has any relevance.
It doesn’t look much like a Lightning flying away from you so much as a rather rude rendition of a strutting tom:D
If anyone can shed any further light on what it is meant to represent (apart from the obvious) and who might have painted it and why, I’d be interested to hear.
Anyway, here it is (apologies for the poor quality and thread hijack):

Similar to this one?

TFF Cat
At the risk of going even further off topic didn’t Peter Vangucci’s 19 Sqn Lightning F.2A also have a picture of the back end of a cat with the legend ‘Often licked but never beaten’? In this case I think it was on the left side of the fuselage under the cockpit?
Peter
The cat was put on the aeroplanes around June 1966, somewhere I have an original which I will post when I find it. mcdwell

One or two shots of the afore-mentioned marking in my Lightning book published by IAP a year or so back. I’ll see if I can find the original photos…
Anyone got any other pics I’d love to see ’em!

Dayglo Cats!
I think that if you look closely at the badge it is meant to be a Cat viewed from the rear…If you take some mind bending drugs its what a Lightning looks like in the air from behind!! All the aircraft that had the badges were indeed TFF a/c. I think the names Korky, Jinx and Felix were used All the badges were temporary using Dayglo adhesive then painted on top. Hope this info is of help
