Taxes and Charges

I was looking at the prices from Glasgow to London Stansted and back on the 16 Aug on Easyjet and FLYGlobespan and noticed that with FLYGlobespan the Total Cost is £39.98 which is made up of

Description Price Quantity Total
ADULT PRICE £0.38 1 £0.38
TAXES/FEES/CHARGES £29.80 1 £29.80
FUEL SURCHARGE £9.80 1 £9.80

and Easyjets prices are
Description Price
Airfare per adult or child £25.98
(per person)
Taxes and charges per adult or child £10.00
(per person)
Total amount due for 1 adult £35.98 (total)

What i’d like to know is how the Taxes and charges for Globespan can be nearly triple the price of the Taxes and charges for Easyjet?

Who decides these charges is it the airline or the airport and if it’s the latter why do they charge 1 airline a lot more than the other?

The whole taxes/surcharges issue is becoming one big rip-off imo; I’ve just been checking some fares with BA and within a ticket costing £75; the flight only costs £32!

Easy are issuing a new policy of showing the total price inc of tax before you go to the checkout page on the web some time in the summer. They are trying to force the others to do so. The price you see is the price you pay, seems a lot fairer.

I agree with what K1664 says here

There should be some sort of government control to prevent airlines offering artificially low prices and then higher costs and charges

Globespan seem to average out costs and charges throughout their network – try booking a flight to and from Spain and you will see the same charges for each leg , yet Spanish airport charges are much lower than the UK

If you compare the costs and charges to Easyjet or Ryanair , they are much higher.

The Air Transport Users Council recently wrote a report on Taxes and Charges.

See it here: http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/306/AUC%20report%20on%20taxes,%20fees%20and%20charges.pdf

That’s what I was trying to say – but Damien put it much better.

Thanks, Damien. 🙂

Maybe it is illegal but they seem to do it and I dont think its possilbe to regualte such a thing with fares constantly changing etc.

Surely that’s illegal, making ‘fake’ taxes?

I was actually going to say the same the other thing I noticed with GLOBESPAN is they charge a FUEL SURCHARGE of £9.80 shouldn’t that be in with Taxes and charges as it is another charge.

I mean fair enough the fare is only 38p return but after they slap on the TAXES/FEES/CHARGES of £29.80 and then the FUEL SURCHARGE of £9.80 the fare is £39.98 which is dearer than easyjet.

So therefor although they advertise cheaper flights after their charges they aren’t any cheaper than any other airline.

Taxes, “Fees” and “Charges” are usually lumped together as a single item, wannabe. It’s very rare to see them itemised as individual charges.

The taxes per se remain the same, but the amount actually charged can vary as in the example above.

Also some airlines slash their fares and add the rest onto the taxes and charges to make the actual fare look a little better.

Some airlines are given reduced landing fees at airport like Easy would do at STN becasue of the high level of traffic they put through there. Also some airlines slash their fares and add the rest onto the taxes and charges to make the actual fare look a little better.
