Last weekend The Buccaneer Aviation Group had the opportunity to boroscope all five Rolls-Royce Speys (two in XW544, two in XX894 and one spare). A Huge thanks to Chris Collins for performing this. Unfortunately this has revealed heat damage to both of XX894’s engines and they must either be replaced, or stripped and the damaged parts replaced.
So, does anyone know of any RR Spey 101s, either operational or static examples that might be available or could donate parts? Any and all leads would be gratefully received (are any static bucc owners on here?). This sight won’t be seen again until this work has been done;

One of the troublesome engines;
Thank you
Sven

AST at Perth MAY have a pair of 102’s…….. I’ve mentioned it to Andy already, but it may be worth a look….

Thats good news, must be loads of NGV’s bumping about with the scrapping of the Nimrods (as long as they’re compatible)

Boscombe is scrapping the BAC 1-11 so maybe worth a call there also!!

As an update, we have been informed that these parts can be common with other Speys, so if anyone has a Spey of any mark they don’t plan to run, or knows of one, we’d very much like to hear from them. Thanks again to Peter for the above link.
Anyone know of one of these sitting around with its engines?

Or even one of these?

For the TF41s, try AMARG at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona, US.
I believe they still have quite a few TF41s sitting around in ex-ANG A-7Ds & ex-USN A-7Es. They might even know of some NGVs sitting around packaged on a shelf somewhere.

They aren’t the easiest thing to get to, we will need to dismantle the whole rear end of the engine to get to them, but they can be replaced, they are no similarities with other Speys unfortunately, it’s a 101 we need!
We have a Spey rollover stand and the manuals to disassemble them but obviously it would save a lot of time if we could just swap them with some in preservation that the owners have no intention of running!

How easily replaceable are the NGV’s? I had to replace a set on an M701 after it ate them, is their any commonality between other Speys?

Thanks for doing that Sven, just to clarify a few points,
The bits that have burnt through are the Nossle Guide Vanes (NGVs) they direct the flow onto the first stage of the HP turbine, so are the first things after the combustion chambers.
As to the replacement engines, anyone who has one, will get one that looks exactly the same in return, just it wouldn’t be runnable. We have all the equipment and experience to perform engine changes and would leave the aircraft looking exactly as it did, for out of aircraft engines it should just be a straight swap so you you wouldn’t lose anything.
Any help anyone can provide would be very much appreciated!

That is unfortunate Sven.. hopefully spares can be found..
Thanks Peter. It is unfortunate, but not insurmountable. The team have worked wonders to get this far, let’s hope she’s not silent for long.

What has happened to the engines Sven?
From one of the crew present during the inspection;
“Some of the HP stator’s on both engines have received damage due to high temperatures. Probably caused by blockage in one of/some of the fuel nozzles. It’s caused an uneven burn pattern and concentrated the heat in one area causing the damage.”
So either a new engine, or new HP stators are required. I guess there aren’t many Spey 101s in Canada?
