Had a few thoughts about this bird after all the reporting after aeroindia:
(btw, after looking at the pics, have to admit, it is among the best looking ones with rafale and the flanker).
empty weight ~ 6500kg
empty equipped ~ 9500kg (includes fuel, fluids, ammo etc)
total fuel carried ~ 2700-3000kg (my guess)
engine ~ EJ-200 (thrst: 6kn/9kn, SFC .80, 1.70, 990kg) or F-414 (6.5kn/9.8kn, SFC .80?/ 1.76, 1100kg?)
So, what kind of range figures can we expect for a bird like this with the two different engines? My guess – it is about 30% lighter than the F-16C, has a smaller engine (lower sfc?), carries fractionally less fuel internally. The Gripen NG for example, is in a similar situation and quotes a range of 2800km on internal fuel alone (equal to F-16 – 3100kg)! Thats getting close to vanilla flanker range!
have at it.
And pleaase, none of the flaming (or guessing about its fate – we now know that the IAF is probably going to get a couple of 100 of these birds anyway, so the point is moot).
regards,
USS.
