Telly. The BIG question.

OK team.
Big TV purchase time.
40 inch(ish) screen. Will most likely go on a unit in the corner, taking advantage of the viewing angle 45 degrees to room.
I’ve kinda made my mind up it’s to be a Sony or a Panasonic. Simply based on the very satisfactory results I’ve had with other products from these two. This by no means indicates that their tellies are any good…what do you think?
Nowthen, LCD or Plasma?
Pittfalls and prattfalls to be listed please.
Tanks in advance.

£1,000. This must include the 5.1 too. 32 inch is also possibly the limit.

got a Sharp 42″ LCD 1080p with built in freeview. Its hooked up to a PS3, XBOX360, WII, Sky my pc and 5.1 surround it cost £750 with 5 years warrenty free, and its absolutely the best £750 ive ever spent the pic is crystal clear and when its in 1080p mode for blueray dvds or the gamestations its like being at the cinema.

A friend of mine has a 52″ Panasonic plasma which he bought a couple of years ago which is the biggest pile of junk ever (his words). He says that sinse he bought it the picture has slowly deteriorated to the point that hes going to sell it and get a lcd but at a smaller size.

Shopping around is definately the best option but dont buy one from a supermarket another friend owns a TV repair shop, Supermarket TVs pay his mortgage at any given time he has at least 12 in for repair.

Be carefull what you buy:):)

I bought a 40″ Sony Bravia LCD …….. WOW !!!

Thanks for that. A lot of people are swearing by the Sony kit.

The Mrs has been squirreling a few quid away for this very purpose so whereas I would normally go for ASDA’s own brand or similar, I can afford a Sony / Panasonic.

Never mind the type of telly, Old Shape. You need to buy some nice big speakers so you can listen to Britain’s Got Talent in all its true glory. 😀

Paul

…that was the next diversion of this thread, “Which” 5.1 system.
My 6 year old watches Britains got talent. It’s aimed at his age.
I just drool over Amanda Holdem.

I did see that woman-thing, best described as an unfortunate collection of features. With the voice of an Angel.

Try the Samsung mk.2 / “B” series they are presently introducing. We recently got a B model 32″ 720p and it is rather good for SD viewing.

LED is jaw-droppingly beautiful but too expensive for most at the moment.

I bought a 40″ Sony Bravia LCD about a month ago and I love it. I swithered between that and a 44″ Panasonic Viera plasma, but the Sony won. I’d recommend you go to a decent showroom that’s playing an HD source through all of the display models so that you can make a like for like judgment on the picture quality. In my case I went to the local ‘Tesco Massif’ and stood for ages watching the BBC HD channel on various models before settling on the two I mentioned.

They say if you want to go bigger than 40″ you should go plasma, but with the newer ‘generation 4’ LCD technology I think you can go beyond 40″ with LCD’s. As for the final decision to go Sony, I felt the Viera was just a little washed out looking compared to the Bravia, colour wise. I also felt it wasn’t as crisp and as with all plasma screens the risk of image burn still exists. That said, plasma screens offer a nicer refresh rate and slightly smoother images than LCD but you only really notice that if you sit up close to the screen and that’s really not the way to watch telly.

I’m now marvelling at things like South Pacific, Yellowstone and Blue Planet on the BBC-HD channel, the word is very much WOW !!!

I’ve heard the new tech: OLED, is the way forward 😉

Yes, me too. But I don’t want to be the prototype tester, at the top of the supply-demand curve paying 6 times the worth of the product just to be “The first”. Only to find that you’ve been the market tester and they don’t care if it breaks because version 2 is already planned for launch in 6 months.
Does that sound negative? Sheesh, truth is a killer. LoL.
