Tempest V – Help needed.

Hi All,

As some of you may be aware I build large scale model aircraft. The next project is a Tempest V (1/5th scale). I’m hoping to start this later on in the year. This is a request – I need some good quality close up pictures of certain areas of the airframe. So if you’ve got a digi-camera & could send me some close ups I’d be most grateful.

The areas I need now are:

tailplane/fin area, especially the fairing round the tailplane/fuselage. Any detailed bits- trim tabs etc

tailwheel

Undercarriage mains. Inside the U/c bays.

If the flaps are open, inside there, too.

Pictures of any or all these areas would be of great help to me.

Cheers,
Neilly

Hi Allan & Christer,

I think the book will have to wait, I’ve been spending on my Mossie, just recently. So the old financies are a bit low:(

I like the look of that Tempest model, it looks very scale like, unlike some, I’ve seen! I thought there would be one or two Beamont Tempests & I know there quite a few Clostermann versions. I’ve still got plenty of time to decide (Snapper, here’s your chance for bribery & corruption:p ). I still think EJ 762 looks the best bet. I might post up a poll, closer the time!

Cheers,
Neilly

Neilly,

The 1/4-scale Tempest built by Sivert Bjork is gonna be painted as Clostermann´s JF-E (one of them..) as soon as its warm enough in his garage.

I think 97% of all Tempest models I have seen are JF-Es, a few are JF-Zs and SA-Ns. The only model I have seen painted as R-B is built by Bob Partington, UK. From a Ron Daniels 1/11-scale kit.

My next Tempest, in 1/6th scale, will be painted as R-B with the i/d stripes. Nice drawings in +4 Publication´s book, isn´t it Neilly?

/Christer

Tempest V – Runways to Victory book

Hi Guys – Runways to Victory can be obtained by contacting Peter Celis direct on pcelis@worldonline.be – you will have to move fast as he is away on Belgian Air Force duty from 24 April to 13 May. Cost now is €64.95 including P&P to the UK. My bank (Lloyds TSB) wanted an extortionate amount to transfer euros to his account so Peter accepted that good old standby – namely cash. hope this helps – Allan

Do Bee’s. Well documented, and very much Mr Tempest. You’ll make me happy too. And that’s the main thing.

Hi Christer,

Got those 2 books. The +4 Publication is superb, a gem of a book for a modeller.

I did think about putting my Tempest in Bea Beamonts colours, but I thought there may be several around. EJ 762 looks a good bet, unless I see another model of this aeroplane. Out of interest, that BIG Tempest model on your site, how’s that doing? Do you know which Tempest it’s going to represent?

Runways to Victory, sounds an interesting read. Where can I get a copy?

Cheers,
Neilly

Tempest V

I saw the piece about “Runways to Victory” – it’s superb – I received mine last week and it’s well worth the additional P&P to get it over to the UK. Okay – so I am a bit biased as I contributed to the book the 125 Wing ORB for it’s Belgian period, plus some of Dad’s comments and pocketbook about B.60 Grimbergen, B.70 Antwerp/Deurne, B.64 Diest/Schaffen and Y.32 Ophoven – but once you see it you will reckon it’s worth the money – and yes I paid for mine – 30 colour photo’s and god knows how many B&W – mainly contributed by individuals so not seen before. Peter Celis flies F-16’s in 31 squadron of the Belgian Air Force from Klein Brogel and this could be the definitive book on Belgian ALG’s in 1944/1945. cheers – Allan

Yes, Bee was indeed Mr Tempest. And a well photographed airframe was JN751 (unlike RP-B -cannot for the life of me get that buggers identity discovered). You can then match with PR-G, his Typhoon, and his Hurricane too at a later date. JN751 was the first Tempest to knock down a Hun too.

My Friend will be getting his copy of ‘Runways to Victory’ brought over in July by some Belgian friends, it seems to have been well received so far. I shall take a peek at his copy…

I’ll back up the book reccomendation by Chris Thomas, as well as his other titles. Neilly, you drive for a living, right? Are you likely to end up anywhere Lowestoft in the near future? I have built up a fair collection of Typhoon/Tempest books you are welcome to flick through down at the pub.

And Neilly/Tom, I look forward to seeing the CD! I may well head down to see this fuselage too sometime, if possible. Sounds almost sexual to my twisted mind!

Neilly,

You were looking for “special” Tempests, then I can recommend another book: “Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2” by Chris Thomas. Very nice colour plates and photos, just some tips:

R-B (JN751): Wg Cdr Roland Beamont´s Tempest with i/d or D-Day stripes. (Bee is Mr. Tempest)
JJ-F (EJ762): Flt Lt Fairbanks, Tempest Top Scorer.
JF-Z (JN862): Flt Lt Van Lierde, destroyed 44 V1s. On June 23 1944 he destroyed five Divers!
SA-A (NV969): Sqn Ldr Schrader: 9 and 2 shared in Tempests.

So you don´t have to make another Clostermann JF-E…
My latest Tempest is painted as SD-F (EJ600), the Tempest in which Sqn Ldr Joe Berry was killed. Berry was the “Top V1 killer”, 60 V1s!! Unfortunately there is no known photo of this aircraft.
The next Tempest model (1/6-scale) will definitely be painted as Beamont´s R-B.

/Christer

PS. Snapper: Yesterday I got my copy of “Runways to victory”, its a brick! Excellent book, very high quality and lot of photos. DS

Hi Tom,

I’d really appreciate both the CD & a look at your fuselage. If it’s okay with you, I’ll make a copy it for the old fella, Snapper.

The Mossie won’t be finished in time, for Brooklands which is a big shame because I’d love to have a go at bombing the dams. I’ve had a bit of a set back. I’ve had a problem getting the port engine to run right, it’s slow to pick up revs. Having swopped everything round, carbs, electrics & finally the engines themselves. The only thing that’s been the same all the time is the silencers. So I’m having to send them back, to see what’s causing the back pressure problem.

The Tempest will be in the air in a fraction of the time it’s taken me to do the Mossie. By comparison, it’s a well designed model, well up to the usual high standards of American kits! There are even 100% scale undercarriage available, bit expensive, but if I start saving now ?

I contact you direct with my address.

Cheers,
Neilly

Hi Neilly, I’ve got a cdr with all my pics of both 778 and 693 kicking around here somewhere, made a spare when the lads making the model for IL2 requested pics. If you want to come and have a look at our fuselage (wings are elsewhere) you’re more than welcome otherwise I could easily post it to you. Nice Mossie btw, what will you be taking to the Brooklands show?

Hi Christer,

How could I forget your excellent site? I’ve not had a look for a bit & it’s better than ever! You’re doing a superb job. Out of interest are there any ‘special’ Tempests? By which I mean a Tempest which has a bit of something out the ordinary, from other Tempests. Whether it’s something the Tempest was involved with or it’s particular pilot. I like to base my models on aircraft or pilots that had a bit history & haven’t been modelled before.

I’ve just ordered the +4 Publication, so I’ll have something to look at next week. I’m still interested in any pictures, if anyone visits Hendon in the coming months.

Cheers,
Neilly

Hi Neilly,

Have you seen the photos at my website? For example Walkarounds > NV778. I have all of the photos in larger sizes if you need.
4+ Publications Tempest book is also recommended. The best Tempest book when you are looking for pics of details.

Btw, your Mosquito looks fantastic!

Take Care!
Christer

Can’t help mate. I have a few bits from Typhoon and Tempest II (Hendon). TomW is working on Kermits V though, he may be able to help.
