Ten Aircraft of Your Choice In 1946

Just wondered what everyones choices would have been if they had the opportunity to have ten favourite WW2 machines and of course the ability to time travel ?

WP840-that MiG 3 is beautiful. Never realised what a good-looking aeroplane that was.

Personally, glad to see a few of the Hawker family on a lot of lists. For family reasons i must concur with whoever said “Typhoon.”

For family reasons:

Hawker Tempest II
Two Hawker Typhoon (so now I could have one flyer, one static)
RAF Curtiss Tomahawk (nice one Colin! My grandfather flew these on gunnery training (iirc) before joining the squadrons with Typhoons, and had quite a soft spot for them-surprised it got a mention)
Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley
Hawker Hart Trainer

And some for me:

Junkers Ju88
DeHavilland Mosquito
Junkers Ju52
Focke-Wulf Fw190, ideally a 2 seater like the one at Hendon

My personal choices. if we could all have our ten, I’d approach those with Typhoons, and tour europe as a three-ship.

Dont often post on the forums but these “we can dream…” threads I like.

This isnโ€™t as easy as it first appears, is it? Iโ€™d go for-

Miles Master 1
Vickers Wellesley
Fairey Battle
Me163 Komet (assuming it could somehow be made safe to fly)
DH Sea Hornet
Short Stirling
HP Halifax
Supermarine Stranraer
HP42 (OK, essentially a civil type, but also impressed into the RAF)
HP Hampden

Ten Aircraft of your choice in 1946

DeHavilland DH 103 Hornet
Heinkel HE-100
Hawker Typhoon MKIB ‘Car Door’ canopy
DeHavilland DH 100 Vampire I (or then ‘Spider Crab?’)
Martin Baker MB-5
Supermarine Spitfire IXc
Yakovlev Yak-3
Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe
Lockheed P-38F Lightning
He 219 Uhu

I suppose in hindsight, this list reflects more one of historical preservation terms. Also what I think would have been very interesting to fly and compare their performance.

Top of my list (any list!) is the superb DH ‘Hornet’. The Hornet was one of those drop dead beautiful aircraft with near perfect performance. Gone, never to be seen again. Sigh!
