Test Pilot Film

Does anyone know the title and any details of a 1950’s US film about a test pilot…

All I can really recall is a fairly thin plot about a guy who was thought to have had a break down when in fact there was a problem with the new wonder jet he was testing. I think his best friend and fellow test pilot was lost ‘covering’ for him…or something.

The reason I remember it is that in one scene there is a view of the airfield, very very large, from the control tower. In the background a tricycle undercarriaged twin fin aircraft that I was convinced was a He219.
