Test pilot (me)

Myself and a freind are very keen flyers, o.k he might not have the money to do much of it but none the less we are always thinking of it, it’s like a love story except without the girl with the replacement of the aircraft.

We have recently downloaded some plans for glider wing with a dort of seat to sit in which you can build and fly yourself, the site shows the building process and the flying of it.

We are both going to build this wing and when we have finished try to fly it at our local park, the design is basically a rectangle of ply-wood with aluminium nailed to it with a home made rope harness attatched to it, the chap who made and flew it on the fantastic site we got it from got 1000yrds in this thing.

Are we mad well that is for you to decide but I will tell you that this is going to be fun, we won’t get any thermals from it and it will just be a decent glide off a hill but none the less we will do it and we will fly it, even if it kill’s us. (Maybe thats an exaduration)

Do any of you really think a huge rectagle shape of ply-wood with aluminium nailed to it will fly, remember we are using very light materials? How far it at-all air born do you think we will get?

With hard work the construction will take a few weeks with the help of good old b&q, we are looking at informing the paper’s of this event after if if it works.

I look forward to your replys and yes the glide from 50ft to 0ft will be in class G airspace and yes it will go no further than 1000yds for those of you who could have a problem with this, then again it’s not ilegal.

I seem to remember Clmax being a jolly series of books published by some nice chaps from Sweden.

Might still have one or two under the bed at home. Do you want me to look them out for you?

Moggy

Most definitely!

By the way …
What is its coefficient of lift?
What tool will you use to push the nails through the aluminium?
With what are you going to secure these fixings, to ensure that they do not just slip out?
What gauge aluminium will you be using?

Surely fabric would be lighter than metal? Maybe your mother can donate a table cloth.

Don’t confuse the poor little lamb!!! if he hasn’t done his Aerodynamics/Principles of Flight exam (or the equivalent for the PPL – excuse the igerrance), he won’t know what you mean by CL

AF: Note the strategic use of the “roll eyes” icon at the bottom, which the forum software actually labels as “Roll Eyes (sarcastic)”.

Anyway, I believe the Birdman competition which, incidentally, is this Sunday 4 July, proves that r is not alone. Scary but true.

Robert

Your behaviour is perfectly normal.

Janie, Janie, Janie!! What are you saying???!!!! Surely this is an oxymoron (or is it a non sequitur – I can never remember!)!! Does this “defence” of young R mean that there is something you’re not telling us?? 😉

… Alternatively:

1. If you are a bit of a handyman, join the PFA and get advice on building aircraft, else

2. If you are a bit of a scientist, joint the Royal Aeronautical Society and their Engineering section will be delighted to help point you in the right direction (and I don’t mean downhill at the park!) and turn your skills into a paid career.

3. Go hangliding. Much quicker and easier than your idea.

Google will point you to the websites for all three.

Birdman of Bognor

Robert

Your behaviour is perfectly normal. There are many people, still alive, who have had ideas like this and survived; sadly, more who failed and are dead though.

Anyway they have banded together for moral support (and to share glue) and created the Birdman of Bognor. You just have to look at this website to believe it.

This way you can do it legally and get famous on telly. You never know, some aeronautical impressario may be watching and wish to sponsor future ideas of yours.

Good luck, young man, good luck!

Wave goodbye to a lot of money, your health and your future in aviation.

If you were to put your enthusiasm into the right direction you would go far.

But you don’t.

Ah but he doesn’t need an FAA Class 2 medical for this! Sectioning, maybe, but not a medical! 😉

Which could be why the basic law in hang gliding is: never fly higher than you are willing to fall:)

Sounds like a Darwin Awards contender to me! Bear in mind that even 50ft altitude is plenty enough to kill yourself if the ‘structure’ fails.
Unless you want to terminate your prospective RAF career before it starts, I’d suggest finding another way to get your thrills. 😉

Re: Test pilot (me)

yes well I can’t remember the site off by heart and I don’t have time to go looking but you can look it up at yahoo under the wright brothers compertition, look for the 1902 glider, you should find it.

Im going for my FAA medical very soon, maybe next week so wish me luck, I can live with a NPPL but I would like to do my CPL.
